Warning: Peptide shots just got easier to get, but the safety proof isn’t there

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Peptide shots being drawn from a small glass vial into a syringe

(NaturalHealth365) Peptide shots just got easier to get, but the evidence behind them has not caught up. On October 28, the U.S. health department (HHS) said the FDA won’t act against licensed pharmacies that mix six peptides for patients. However, the pharmacies must meet certain conditions.

The six are BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, Semax and Epitalon. The HHS notice does not make any of the six an FDA-approved drug. An HHS spokesperson told CBS News the policy “does not grant FDA approval or establish clinical safety and effectiveness.”

NaturalHealth365 takes a clear stand: We urge strong caution with peptide shots. Many of our readers have little faith in federal health agencies, and we understand why. A looser policy does not prove safety, and neither does a glowing personal story.

What changed with peptide shots

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Some peptides, such as insulin, are approved medicines with decades of human data. However, the six peptides in the HHS policy have nothing close to that record.

Under the policy, a state-licensed pharmacy, a federal facility or a licensed doctor can mix one of the six. However, the patient must have a prescription. Each product can hold only one active ingredient. In addition, the raw material must come from an FDA-registered maker with a certificate of analysis. Side effects must be reported, too.

The notice is still labeled a draft, and CBS reported public comments through November 13. Meanwhile, HHS says the hands-off approach applies while the FDA works on a formal rule. So far, the FDA has not proposed one.

The case for easier access

HHS has a real argument, and readers deserve to hear the argument fairly. People already buy peptides from foreign and black-market sellers, where a “research use only” label protects nobody. HHS says licensed pharmacies offer “a more controlled alternative” and that the policy advances patient choice while protecting safety.

Supporters agree. Lee Rosebush of the American Academy of Peptide Medicine praised a “forward-thinking, evidence-based approach.” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. calls himself a “big fan” and has described using BPC-157 for a muscle injury.

We value medical freedom, too.  But, we also remember that unapproved fluoride supplements for kids stayed on the market for about 50 years before the FDA acted. So, nobody here is asking you to trust the agency blindly. Real freedom of choice depends on honest facts, and the facts on these peptides fall far short.

Why the safety record falls short

You don’t need to trust the FDA to take the evidence seriously. For example, the agency put BPC-157 and TB-500 on a do-not-compound list in 2023. The Associated Press (AP) said the reasons included allergic reactions, kidney damage and tumor growth risk.

Later, ABC News reported that FDA staff opposed all seven peptides reviewed in July. The staff pointed to weak trial data, uneven batches and harmful immune reactions.

In addition, the AP reported that most FDA scientific staff opposed the October policy, based on six unnamed sources. However, staff also helped add the safety conditions.

Even worse, the FDA found no human clinical or safety studies for KPV, TB-500, MOTS-c or Epitalon. The agency also found products sold as “BPC-157” that held different molecules. In other words, the label on a vial may not match the contents.

Our readers know drug company deception is real, and the peptide business deserves the same hard look. Sellers profit from peptide shots whether or not the shots work.

Peptide shots have almost no human proof

BPC-157 is the best known of the six, yet the human record is tiny. A systematic review found just three studies with 30 people in total. Most people improved, and the studies reported no treatment-related side effects. However, the studies were poor quality and the certainty was very low.

Sadly, the authors did not hedge. They wrote that BPC-157 “should not be used clinically in humans outside ethically approved, regulated, high-quality clinical trials.”

Likewise, the July advisory votes offer little comfort. The panel backed BPC-157, KPV and TB-500 by just 8-6, with one member abstaining, and the vote was non-binding. Ars Technica reported that Kennedy added eight members, at least six with peptide business ties.

Why NaturalHealth365 urges caution

Our position is firm: Popularity is not evidence. Thirty people in three poor-quality studies cannot show what months or years of injections will do to your body.  In truth, nobody knows the long-term risks.

You can weigh the facts for yourself, and we believe the proof falls far short of the risks. Stay away from any peptide marked “research use only” or sold without a prescription.

Questions to ask your doctor

If you are still considering a peptide, bring these questions to your doctor first:

  • Is this peptide FDA approved for my condition?
  • What human studies support using the peptide for someone like me?
  • How does the pharmacy confirm identity and purity?
  • Is the maker FDA-registered, and can I see the certificate of analysis?
  • What side effects should I watch for, and how will those be reported?

If your doctor can’t answer clearly, walk away.
