How the U.S. Military Built A.I. And Pointed It at You

Confirmed Bankruptcies and Insolvencies in 2026

The “shakeout” predicted by Gartner has already begun, with several high-profile AI companies collapsing or entering insolvency in early-to-mid 2026 due to broken unit economics and inflated valuations.

Q1 2026: The Wrapper Massacre The first quarter of 2026 saw a wave of closures among “AI wrapper” startups—companies building thin interfaces over third-party models.

  • Failure Rate: Approximately 60–70% of these companies generated zero revenue and failed as gross margins compressed below 20%.

  • Notable Closures: Several generic content generation and “ChatGPT for PDF” startups ceased operations as OpenAI and Google integrated their features natively.

  • Jasper AI: Once valued at $1.5 billion, the company faced severe distress, laying off staff and pivoting away from its core consumer writing product as growth stalled.

Q2 2026: Infrastructure & Mid-Tier Distress By mid-2026, the crisis expanded beyond wrappers to capital-intensive infrastructure plays and mid-tier foundation model labs.

  • CoreWeave: While not yet bankrupt, the company entered the “distress zone” with an Altman Z-Score of 0.52 (below 1.8 indicates high bankruptcy risk).  With $29 billion in liabilities and negative net margins (-22.7%), analysts warn it could be the “first domino” to fall if AI spending slows.

  • Rain AI & Emerge: Notable competitors in the hardware and character AI spaces respectively have shut down, unable to compete with hyperscalers.

  • 23andMe: Though not purely AI, its 2026 bankruptcy highlighted the risk of data-centric business models failing to monetize assets, destroying $1.4 billion in value.

Projected Timeline (Late 2026–2027)

Q3–Q4 2026: The Foundation Model Correction Analysts predict the next phase will involve Tier-2 foundation model companies

  • Insolvency Risk: At least one major standalone model lab (distinct from OpenAI or Anthropic) is expected to face insolvency or a fire-sale acquisition as venture capital dries up for non-profitable entities.

  • OpenAI’s Precarious Position: Despite its size, OpenAI projects a $14 billion loss for 2026 alone, with cumulative losses potentially reaching $44 billion by 2028.  While a bankruptcy is not immediate due to massive funding reserves, its path to solvency remains critically dependent on successful capital raises from sovereign wealth funds.

2027: The Agentic AI Shakeout Gartner forecasts that by the end of 2027, more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled.  This will likely trigger a second wave of bankruptcies among startups that sold “autonomous agents” without proven production capabilities, leaving enterprises to manage complex migrations away from failed vendors.

AI company bankruptcies 2026

The “Wrapper” Extinction Event

Data from early 2026 indicates a systemic failure among “AI wrapper” startups—companies building thin interfaces over existing models without proprietary data or moats.

  • Failure Rate: Of the 14,000+ AI startups launched globally in 2024, approximately 3,800 shut down in 2025, and another 1,800 closed by early 2026.  This represents a 40% failure rate within 24 months

  • Revenue Reality: Analysis by SimpleClosure found that 60–70% of AI wrappers generate zero revenue, as bridge financing dried up in 2026.

  • Margin Compression: AI-native products are averaging 52% gross margins (vs.  75–85% for traditional SaaS) because inference costs now consume 23% of revenue for scaling companies.
