South Africa’s health minister said Thursday that a new coronavirus variant appears to be spreading rapidly in parts of the country. It has also been detected in Botswana, Hong Kong, Israel and Belgium.
UK Health Minister Sajid Javid said the variant “may be more transmissible” than the Delta strain and that “the vaccines that we currently have may be less effective”.

confirmed there have been 35 cases of COVID-19
Six residents have since died with the virus.
25 positive residents in the home, and four are receiving care in hospital.
vaccination rate among residents at Westhaven is 90 per cent, while all employees and contractors are fully vaccinated.
Four of the positive residents were not fully vaccinated.
