Suspended Sentence After Flying English Flag

Despite government opposition to “pro-free speech narratives,” the UK is still a soft tyranny for now. However, the moonbats in charge have laid the groundwork for something harder. Already, authorities will come after the English for flying their own flag.

A man who hung a flag from York’s medieval walls which displayed an abusive message towards Labour MP Rachael Maskell has received a suspended sentence.

Here’s the “abusive message”:

Lee Moran, 55, of York, put up a St George’s Cross near Walmgate Bar with the writing: “This one’s for you, Maskill” [sic] on 16 September last year.

For now, patriots might get away with a suspended sentence. If they persist, this won’t last.

Maskell, who had previously called for other St George’s Cross flags to be removed from lampposts around the city, said the incident caused her to feel “distressed with the threat of being a target in political violence”.

According to Moran, the point of misspelling her name was to imply she is a killjoy and a buzzkill. Whether anyone regarded this as a genuine threat is doubtful. The actual crime appears to be flying the English flag in defiance.

Maskell … said that she feared the flag would “incite a larger group of people”.

It is not tenable for a nation to be ruled by people who feel threatened by its flag.

The convicted thought-criminal Moran has plenty of company. Via Modernity:

At least 62,199 people were arrested for “communications offences” between 2021 and 2025 — roughly 34 a day. Campaign group Big Brother Watch compiled the figures from Freedom of Information replies covering 38 of 45 territorial forces.

Seven territorial forces did not supply full data. Assuming they have been average, total arrests would come to about 73,000, or one for every 940 Britons.

The laws doing the work are the Malicious Communications Act 1988, the Communications Act 2003 and the Online Safety Act 2023. They catch “grossly offensive,” “indecent,” “obscene” or “menacing” messages. In practice that means jokes, protest slogans, WhatsApp rows and social media posts the wrong officer finds inconvenient.
