Children among at Least 60 Orthodox Christians Massacred in Ethiopia

At least 60 Orthodox Christians have been killed in a series of brutal attacks on villages in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, where armed men reportedly went house to house, shooting and stabbing residents, including young children.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church said on Monday that 14 worshippers were killed on 20 October in Merti district and another 46 on 24 October in Shirka district, both in Arsi Zone. More than 20 homes were burned and over 20 people hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the Church.

The deadliest assault began on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning in the communities of Chole and Birbo. Residents told Addis Standard that attackers armed with AK-47 rifles and knives overwhelmed local neighbourhood patrols during an assault lasting nearly six hours. Women, elderly villagers and at least six children under the age of 15 were reportedly among the dead.

‘Armed men were going door to door, shooting and stabbing civilians,’ one witness told the newspaper. Survivors also described widespread looting and damage to religious property. Frightened residents remained in hiding even as their neighbours were being buried.

According to two witnesses, between 35 and 37 victims were buried in a mass grave on Sunday, with only a handful of mourners daring to attend. Some wounded residents were taken to hospitals in Gobesa and Shirka, while others required treatment farther away.

The massacre did not come from nowhere; it followed a series of warnings. On Friday, residents in nearby Sire prepared a letter requesting protection from the town administration, but their appeal was ‘not received in time’, one resident told Addis Standard. ‘No one is interested to take us seriously,’ the witness said.

The killings are the latest incidents in years of violence targeting Orthodox Christian communities in Arsi. In July, the independent Ethiopian Human Rights Council documented at least 432 civilian deaths in East Arsi between 2021 and June 2026, alongside abductions, displacement and attacks on churches. Earlier this year, gunmen burned the historic Teleta Saint Gabriel Church in Aseko, while Orthodox priest Abayneh Tebeqe was abducted and killed in Shirka in June.

‘Ethiopian Human Rights Council documented at least 432 civilian deaths in East Arsi between 2021 and June 2026’

Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission has documented previous attacks in Arsi by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), an armed rebel group fighting the government. In September, the OLA joined six other rebel groups in an alliance seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Oromia’s regional authorities accused this alliance of carrying out the latest killings to provoke religious conflict but provided no evidence. A source linked to the alliance instead accused the regional government of orchestrating the attacks.

Condemning the killings, the Church’s Holy Synod demanded immediate protection for worshippers and the prosecution of those responsible, warning that repeated appeals to halt the violence had failed to bring lasting security.
