Haunted Dhaka, Bangladesh

Haunted Dhaka, Bangladesh MY BOOKS: MY BIO: MY MINI-BIO: PAUL’S EBOOKS: Dhaka is widely considered haunted by locals! The city is filled with old ghost stories. These tales are usually tied to tragic history or folklore about invisible spirits called Jinns. Many people believe Jinns hide in large trees, along with abandoned buildings after dark. Here are some of the most famous haunted spots in the city: Lalbagh Fort: spooky stories about the 17th-century Mughal fort. These tales often involve secret tunnels, a ghost on a horse, and the spirit of a princess. The most famous legend features Pari Bibi. She was the beloved daughter of the Mughal governor Shaista Khan. She died tragically in 1684 before the fort was finished. People believe that her ghost wanders around the grounds. Locals say she appears on full moon nights to sing and dance. Another spooky story involves the fort’s underground tunnels (Shurongo Path). These mazes were built to trap invaders. During a revolt in 1857, many soldiers ran into the tunnels to hide and never came back. Legend says the British even sent an elephant into the caves, but it never returned. The tunnels are now sealed. Finally, visitors and guards have reported hearing the sounds of a horse and prayers inside the Quilla Mosque late at night. Dhaka Airport Road: specifically the stretch between the Nikunjo area and the Biman office. According to local lore. Drivers have reported seeing a woman dressed in a white saree suddenly appear directly in front of their vehicles. Many drivers claim to have hit the brakes right before impact, only to find that the woman has instantly vanished. These sudden appearances are blamed for frequent, unexplainable car accidents on that part of the highway. It has been reported that full body apparitions have been seen on this road and the apparitions are from drivers that died on this road. The apparitions look like they are lost.
Dhanmondi 27 Apartment: flickering lights and gives off a very creepy, bad feeling. Locals also say that at this apartment a portal opened and “Shadow Demons” appeared. At first a Shadow Demon will look like a normal human being, but will look shadowy. Then the shadow person will change its shape. The Shadow Demons will have hunched backs, long claws, razor sharp teeth, open sores & lesions, hair that is unkempt & disheveled. Shadow Demons will scratch you, push you or do something that will hurt you in some way. Shadow Demons are very evil. Some locals say that the Shadow Demons will also choke you and try to smother you, so you can’t breathe. Bahadur Shah Park: and a feeling of uneasiness. These spooky stories come from the park’s tragic past. During the 1857 Sepoy Revolt, the British publicly hanged many Indian soldiers—called sepoys—from the trees here. The spirits of these departed fighters are said to visit the park at night. Because of this, the area was historically called Anta Ghar Maidan and was often avoided by locals after dark. Dhaka University: most famous ghost story. Because several students have accidentally drowned here over the years, local legends claim that evil spirits or curses pull swimmers underwater, even those who know how to swim. Curzon Hall, this iconic red-brick architecture is one of the oldest and grandest parts of the campus. Older students and staff often tell stories of unsettling feelings, weird noises, and spooky encounters occurring inside its cavernous depths after dark.
What is a Jinn? |
A djinn (also spelled jinn or anglicized as genie) is a supernatural spirit in ancient Arabian and Islamic mythology. Originating from the Arabic root meaning “hidden from sight,” they are believed to be intelligent beings created from “smokeless fire” who possess free will and live alongside humans.
- Nature: Like humans, djinns are accountable for their deeds and can choose between good, evil, or neutrality. They can be believers or unbelievers.
- Abilities: They are capable of shape-shifting, can take human or animal forms, and are known for exercising supernatural power.
- Origin: The concept bridges both pre-Islamic Arabian folklore and Islamic theology. In the Quran, djinns are mentioned alongside humans and angels.
Usage and Synonyms
In western literature and popular culture, a djinn is typically associated with the word genie—a magical spirit that is often bound to an object (like a lamp) and grants wishes to its summoner.
