Prince’s Palace of Monaco
Monaco has a number of ghost stories told by tourists, locals and even by some of the celebrities that frequent Monaco. Let’s start off with the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.  Visitors have described hearing disembodied footsteps, whispers and apparitions in the historic palace. The building has been associated with centuries of Grimaldi history.

Monte Carlo Casino
There are legends of a phantom gambler appearing late at night and disappearing, along with stories involving a woman in old-fashioned clothing appearing. According to psychic medium LoCana Hathway, the woman in old-fashioned clothing is named Hilda. LoCana feels that Hilda was promiscuous when she was alive. This ghostly lady will appear out of nowhere and then sit next to you. She will flirt with you for a bit and then your attention goes back to what you were doing, and you look back and she has now vanished. You realize that she vanished too quickly and that you must have seen a ghost. In the late 19th century, a famous rumor claimed a wave of bankrupt gamblers took their lives at the casino. Some gamblers claim that they have seen the ghosts of these suicide gamblers. Other stories from staff members say that their bodies were hidden deep in the ground within the gardens.  Historians note that many reports were exaggerated or fabricated by rival French towns. Others claim the stories are true. Folklore talks about a “cursed dice roll” inside the private gaming rooms. The cursed dice roll can lead to a person’s demise. Some visitors claim a lost spirit wanders the halls and influences current bets. Security guards and staff report zero actual paranormal activity as of these present times.  

Saint Nicholas Cathedral
Some paranormal stories concern apparitions and unexplained sensations around the royal tombs. Stories sometimes identify a mysterious Woman in White with Princess Grace, although there is no evidence establishing that identification. Locals who have seen these ghosts claim up and down that they are seeing the ghost of Princess Grace with a Woman in White. Frederick “Freddie” Lanser from Liverpool, England claims that the ghost of Princess Grace and the Woman in White were on the top roof of Saint Nicholas Cathedral and that the ghost of Princess Grace was waving at the people below. Freddie says that only a few people seemed to have witnessed the apparitions. Freddie asked a few people if they saw what he saw and they said that it was a lookalike, not a ghost. Freddie believes it was a ghost and staff inside the Cathedral said that there are no doubles of Princess Grace walking around the Cathedral.  

Oceanographic Museum
Legends claim that footsteps and other unexplained sounds have been heard in its corridors, sometimes attributed to Prince Albert I, the museum’s founder. Ghost hunting groups claim they have acquired EVPs from the museum. Other people say that the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco is not considered haunted, and there are no official or popular ghost stories, legends, or reports of paranormal activity associated with it. Instead of being known for ghosts, the historic institution, perched 85 meters above the Mediterranean Sea and founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I is famous for its marine science exhibits, vast aquariums, and its association with legendary oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who served as its director. Some people say the museum is haunted, while others say it isn’t. What is interesting there are people who claim that they have seen the ghost of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Cousteau has been seen walking the hallway and looking around. When he is sighted, he vanishes. The only way to find out if the Oceanographic Museum is haunted is by conducting an actual investigation (in person). Any takers?  

Port Hercules
Folklore includes stories of phantom ships and mysterious figures appearing around the harbor. While Port Hercules is famous for its modern superyachts and the Monaco Grand Prix, it sits on ancient ground tied to several supernatural and mythical tales. There is The White Lady of Port Hercule. Local Monegasque lore speaks of a spectral “White Lady” whose spirit has been spotted near the edge of the harbor. Besides the White Lady, we have The Alchemist Ghost. Just above the port along the paths of the Rock of Monaco, a 17th-century alchemist is said to wander the old rock gardens. The port gets its name from ancient Greek mythology. According to legend, Hercules cleared the path through the cliffs with his bare hands. The Greeks built a temple here called Monoikos (meaning “lone dwelling”) because it was believed Hercules lived there entirely alone. Sailors for centuries reported feeling an eerie, reverent energy in the natural bay, attributing it to the lingering spirit of the demigod. My sister Sharon while living in Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea has visited Port Hercules and did not experience anything paranormal. 

The Mediterranean
The Mediterranean seafloor acts as a vast underwater graveyard containing thousands of years of human history. Poveglia Island (Venice Lagoon) is located just off the Italian coast in the upper Adriatic arm of the Mediterranean, Poveglia is widely considered one of the most haunted places in the world. It served as a quarantine station for the Black Plague and later a psychiatric hospital. Local lore claims over 100,000 ghosts roam the island, including “Little Maria,” a plague-era child often heard crying on the beach. Then there is the legend of The Shadow Realm Wrecks. Marine archaeologists have discovered massive “ghost fleets” of perfectly preserved ancient Roman, Greek, and Ottoman trading vessels deep in the Mediterranean’s oxygen-depleted layers. Some of these ships still contain human remains, leading divers and historians to describe the deep seafloor as a silent, spectral shadow world. In a more somber and modern sense, the Mediterranean is frequently referred to in news media as being “haunted” by the ongoing refugee crisis. Places like the port of Pozzallo in Sicily hold “boat graveyards” of capsized migrant ships, leaving local residents and survivors to describe being haunted by the memories and voices of those lost at sea.

USS Zaca
Perhaps the most distinctive Monaco haunting is the former yacht of actor Errol Flynn is reportedly haunted. Stories claim that Flynn’s apparition has been seen aboard, accompanied by voices and sounds resembling a party. While there is no scientific evidence to support paranormal claims, the USS Zaca (IX-73)—a historic 118-foot luxury yacht turned World War II Navy patrol vessel carries a legendary reputation in maritime folklore as a haunted ship. The ghost stories surrounding the vessel are heavily tied to its former owner, Hollywood swashbuckler Errol Flynn, who bought the yacht in 1946 and used it to host lavish, wild parties for elite stars. The primary hauntings and lore associated with the ship include The Ghost of Errol Flynn. Flynn died in 1959 while on a trip to sell the Zaca. In the decades following his death, the ship was abandoned and left to rot in the south of France. During this period, locals and caretakers reported seeing a ghostly figure matching Flynn’s description pacing the decks. Locals and tourists claim there were a lot of Phantom Parties. While the ship sat as a decaying hull in the harbor of Villefranche, witnesses claimed they could hear the sounds of phantom music, clinking glasses, and rowdy laughter echoing from the completely empty, dark vessel.  Recent ghost hunters like Monaco’s Phantom Chasers say that the USS Zaca had strong residual energy from the parties that Flynn hosted. The ship’s “haunted” era largely came to an end in 1991 when it was purchased by a businessman, meticulously restored, and returned to active sailing service in the Mediterranean.
