Stellantis Reveals New EV Platform With “Future-Proof” Innovations
Stellantis has unveiled a new platform, called STLA Medium, designed to bring best-in-class range (435 miles) with fast charging times and better performance. The company says that this is the first of four global battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platforms coming in the next two years.
The design of STLA Medium allows Stellantis’ various brands the flexibility to adapt it to host several passenger vehicle designs in the C and D segments. These segments account for about half of all global sales of passenger vehicles and an even larger portion of European sales.
“What we see today is the product of just over two years of no-compromise innovation to deliver clean, safe and affordable mobility, supported by our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO. “The STLA Medium platform demonstrates the power of the global Stellantis technical community, delivering products that are hyper-focused on our customers and rewriting long-held assumptions of transportation as we drive for carbon net zero by 2038.”
The STLA Medium platform allows for two battery pack mixes, a Standard and a Performance. Each offer more range and/or power output. The platform is built on a 400-volt architecture with up to 14 kWh per 100km in efficiency. Battery charging can go from 20 to 80 percent in 27 minutes at 2.7 kWh per minute. Vehicles on the platform can be either front-wheel or all-wheel drive and Stellantis plans on building and selling vehicles based on STLA Medium globally. Vehicles will include cars, crossovers, and sport utilities.
The characteristics of the platform include:
- Wheelbase range of 2,700 to 2,900 mm
- Vehicle length range of 4.3 to 4.9 meters
- Ground clearance of more than 220 mm
- Wheels up to 750mm in diameter
Finally, Stellantis says that this new platform is designed to be “future-proof” in that it is not only modular and flexible, but also capable of utilizing current and future battery technologies, charging systems, and propulsion options.
