A postcard from China

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

By Brian Clegg

I recently received the postcard below, all the way from China. As I’m afraid I don’t answer letters in the post, I thought it would be good to respond to it here, hoping that Guo Ming Yang discovers it.

One question I would ask Ming Yang (if I may) is where he* got my address, as I usually get written communication via the publisher. But let’s take a look at his question: ‘In your view, does the concept of “time” as a dimension lose its intuitive meaning when we approach it from both the perspective of relativity and quantum mechanics?’

When I get emails like this I always start with the proviso that I’m not a scientist, I’m a science writer, and as such I’m not qualified to answer technical science questions. So this is purely about my interpretation of ‘intuitive meaning’.

Given that, I’d answer ‘No.’ Intuitive meaning can only ever really apply to subjective experience – there is no requirement for intuitive meaning in physics theory. Time is usefully envisaged as a dimension when trying to understand relativity, whether it’s on a Minkowski diagram or thinking about the way that spacetime is warped in general relativity. As for quantum theory, again we use time as a dimension in Feynman diagrams, and I can’t see how the various differences in a quantum approach from subjective experience of the world moves us away from time as a dimension (though this may be due to the aforementioned lack of expertise).

If you see this, Ming Yang, do respond in the comments or contact me by clicking Contact Brian at the bottom of any page of my website, www.brianclegg.net

* I’m assuming Ming Yang is a male name, as Google informs me that it is likely to be so – apologies if it’s not in this case.
