Caleb Williams wanted to pay homage to Michael Jordan for Madden 27 cover
It’s been just two days since Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was named the cover athlete for Madden 27. He’s the first Bears’ player to be on the main cover of the game, earning it after a breakout year in 2025.
As anticipation begins for the upcoming game, EA Sports held an event to unveil more details. That included the new trailer featuring Vince Vaughn, new features, and more. While at the “Opening Drive” event, Williams talked about his two different covers of the game for the standard and the deluxe version.
The standard shows Williams doing a “Jumpman” throw similar to the one he had in the NFC Wild Card win over Green Bay. The other is his “Iceman” celebration which was also against the Packers but earlier in the season. The standard version has a bit of a Chicago connection as well, as Williams explained.

While at the event, Williams explained that the standard version was him actually paying homage to an iconic photo of Michael Jordan from 40 years ago.
“That’s the position I want to be in but I also wanted to pay respect to MJ, that was more of what it was,” Williams said via CHGO. “It was more of a respect thing. Bringing retro back, not letting people forget that. Doing it on my side of the world in football. Paying respect to that, him and what he was able to do in Chicago. Just honestly want to bring that energy and vibe back. I think we are on the track to do that. We have to keep winning games.”
Williams went on to say that the idea to do the skyline cover was his idea and how he wanted to pay respect to Jordan. That’s pretty damn cool.
The quarterback is on the right track in terms of building his legacy for this city. We already know what Jordan did for this city and what he meant for this city in his playing days. If Williams can stay on that path, he’s going to be a legend.
