Chicago Bulls land interesting update on top free agent

The Chicago Bulls are entering a pivotal summer in which they are absolutely loaded with cap space, and after putting together a terrific NBA Draft in which they landed both Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain, they have a chance to make significant headway with their roster in free agency.

The Bulls still have major needs up and down their roster, so they should be interested in just about everyone at this point.

Would that include a potential reunion with Collin Sexton?

Chicago acquired Sexton at the trade deadline in a deal that sent Coby White to the Charlotte Hornets. Sexton played in 26 games with 10 starts in a Bulls uniform, averaging 17.5 points per game on very solid 48.2/41.0/82.2 shooting splits.

The 27-year-old is hitting free agency this July, and he should have a rather intriguing market given his ability as a microwave scorer he has displayed throughout his career. So should Chicago take a chance on re-signing Sexton?

John Hollinger of The Athletic recently previewed the upcoming point guard market, and he ranked Sexton eighth among the available floor generals. He also provided a prediction on what he expects Sexton to receive.

“Sexton isn’t really a point guard and is too small and defensively suspect to start on the wing, but he can fill it up when he gets cooking. Sexton is a career 38.9 percent 3-point shooter who averaged over 30 points per 100 possessions for four different teams across eight seasons,” Hollinger wrote. “The full non-taxpayer MLE might be slightly aggressive for a bench microwave type, but a two-year deal between $25 million and $30 million would likely return value.”

Sexton is expected to generate interest from multiple contending teams throughout the NBA, with the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors already being named as potential landing spots for the University of Alabama product. However, he could prove too costly for some of those squads.

The Bulls, on the other hand, have plenty of money. Would they use any of it on Sexton, though?

Chicago has a bunch of young guards, led by Josh Giddey and also including Tre Jones, Rob Dillingham and recent addition Kam Jones. Sexton is still fairly youthful in his own right, but we pretty much know what he is at this point.

Sexton would still provide value for the Bulls, but they may decide to go in a different direction, especially under new executive Bryson Graham.
