The Chicago Cubs sit eight games out of the lead of the National League Central, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of the race.
Even though the Cubs are not playing well, they still will be buyers at the trade deadline. The Cubs finished May with a 13-16 record and are 2-4 to begin June. The biggest hole on the roster is the starting rotation. The Cubs have the prospect capital to acquire an elite arm.
Despite the prospect capital, the Cubs may need to dip into the major league roster to get a deal done.
Chicago Cubs Matt Shaw could be used in a trade to acquire a top-tier starting pitcher
Cubs’ infielder Matt Shaw has been on the injured list since May 22 with mid-back tightness. However, after a four-game rehab assignment, Shaw will be activated on Tuesday.

Shaw should go back to playing all over the diamond. But he could play a few games at third base to help give Alex Bregman a break. Shaw’s return could help him increase his trade value, as he could be used to acquire an elite arm like Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline (Aug. 3).
“The Cubs figure to be in the market for a starting pitcher this summer, and given that their farm system has fallen from MLB Pipeline’s No. 2 ranking two years ago to No. 23 prior to this season, Chicago may have to deal from its big league roster to acquire an impact arm,” wrote MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. “Switch-hitting infielder Pedro Ramírez — Chicago’s No. 2 prospect — has filled in during Shaw’s stint on the injured list, giving the Cubs a built-in replacement if Shaw was to be dealt.”
Shaw would add value to any team acquiring him, given his versatility. Shaw’s played one game in center and left field, two games at first base, five games at third base and 14 games in right field. A change of scenery would also help Shaw, who could benefit from seeing consistent at-bats.
If Shaw is traded, keeping Pedro Ramirez on the roster to fill his place would be the natural move. The Cubs had Ramirez move around the Diamond at Triple-A Iowa to help increase his versatility.
