Chicago Cubs: MLB trade deadline direction remains unclear as season progresses
The Chicago Cubs got back in the win column in dramatic fashion on Thursday night. After falling behind 4-0 to the Athletics thanks to another defensive blunder by Pete Crow-Armstrong, the 2025 Gold Glover made up for it by slugging a home run and getting the walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Now Chicago is 33-30 on the season, but still in fourth place in the ultra-competitive National League Central Division. Fortunately, all the teams in the division are separated by just a few games. If the 2026 season has shown anything, it is that a team can move up and down the NL Central standings quickly.
The Chicago Cubs need to figure out the MLB trade deadline
The MLB trade deadline is not until the end of July, but teams are already trying to figure out what players they will be able to possibly acquire. Additionally, many teams are trying to determine whether they will be buying or selling at the deadline.
Right now, the Cubs fall into the latter category. While they still are within a handful of games of the division lead, Chicago’s play over the last several weeks is not inspiring. If that kind of inconsistent play continues, they may be trading players away rather than bringing notable players in.
On the other hand, if they turn it around, they could be in the market for a big-name starting pitcher.
Recently, Bleacher Report posted the following:
“It’s tough to know what to make of the Cubs, who followed up an 18-12 month of April by going 13-16 in May. They’re not going to be sellers, but how the Cubs perform over the next two months will determine the extent at which president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer buys at.
“Edward Cabrera (blister) and Matthew Boyd (partially torn left meniscus) will soon return from the injured list, but both of them are injury-prone. It’s unclear if Justin Steele will pitch at all this season.
“So adding another starter would make sense for the Cubs. It’s just a matter of how big of a name we are talking. Do they play well enough for the Cubs to go all-in for someone like Skubal, Peralta or Alcantara, or are the Cubs more in the market for a rental like Ray?”
While BR says the Cubs will not be sellers, the fact of the matter is that they have 14 expiring contracts on their roster. If they find themselves far out of the division race come the deadline, there could be some players jettisoned.
On the other hand, if they can maintain a pace in the NL Central, a high-profile starting pitcher could go a long way to helping their chances. But will Chicago part with the necessary prospects required to land Skubal? Probably not.
At the end of the day, the trade deadline is a topic that should be in the back of their minds, but they need to start winning more consistently if they are going to even consider being in the market for someone.
