Chicago Cubs place yet another pitcher on 15-day IL as injury woes continue
There may not be a team in Major League Baseball that has more bad luck with injuries than the Chicago Cubs. Specifically, to their pitching staff. Ever since before the season began, Chicago had injury concerns among their pitchers.
And ever since the season began, it has just gotten worse. Justin Steele has suffered setbacks and Cade Horton is out for the year. Both Matthew Boyd and Edward Cabrera have gone on the injured list multiple times.
These don’t even take into account the multiple relief pitchers the Cubs have had to place on the injured list this year, a list that just grew by one.
The Chicago Cubs placed Phil Maton on the 15-day injured list

In an effort to boost their bullpen, the Cubs signed reliever Phil Maton to a substantial contract over the off-season. Based on the fact that he had a 2.79 ERA in 63 appearances in 2025, it seemed like a good investment.
It hasn’t been.
In 30 appearances for Chicago, Maton is 0-1 with a 6.08 ERA. And on Friday, they placed him on the 15-day injured list:
The Cubs are putting reliever Phil Maton back on the injured list with essentially the same knee issue that sidelined him earlier this season. David Peterson is now on Chicago’s active roster and scheduled to start Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Moving Maton to the injured list allows them to put the newly acquired David Peterson on their active roster without having to make any more roster moves. As seen in the post above, Peterson is going to start the second game of Chicago’s series against Milwaukee.
Peterson is 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA this year. Hopefully the change of scenery leads to some improvements.
