eGaming Regulator Takes Charge, Focuses on eSports Registrations

India’s online gaming sector has entered a new phase of regulation as the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) has officially started functioning as the country’s dedicated gaming regulator. The authority has been established under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and began operations as new online gaming rules came into effect on May 1. Its immediate focus will be registering eSports organizations and creating a stronger system for resolving user complaints.

Officials said that a digital registration portal has already been launched, allowing eSports entities to apply for official recognition. The move is expected to bring greater transparency and accountability to the rapidly growing gaming ecosystem. According to government sources, many applications have already been submitted and several registrations have been approved.

Under the new framework, any platform that promotes or organizes tournaments as eSports events must obtain registration from the authority. The registration will remain valid for ten years and is intended to provide legitimacy to genuine eSports operators. Authorities believe this step will help developers and organizers avoid unnecessary regulatory uncertainty while ensuring compliance with national standards. The regulator is also expected to carefully review applications to prevent real money gaming operators from presenting themselves as eSports platforms.

To strengthen the approval process, applicants will also need certification from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Officials stated that this additional requirement will help maintain the distinction between competitive skill-based eSports and other forms of online gaming that may involve financial risks.

Another major responsibility of the authority will be handling public grievances. The new rules require online gaming service providers to establish a proper complaint resolution system for users. If a complaint is not addressed satisfactorily within 30 days, users can approach the regulator for further review. The authority will then have an additional 30 days to examine the case and issue a decision.
