Sophie Cunningham’s strong message after heated incident with ex-Fever teammate

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Indiana Fever Sophie Cunningham was in the middle of a heated altercation on Monday night. The 6-foot-1 guard had to be separated from Phoenix Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner after the two got into it in the fourth quarter.

Tempers flared late in the game as Bonner got tied up with Caitlin Clark as they battled for positioning. Cunningham joined in on the action, deciding to confront Bonner. This led to both players pointing at each other as an incensed Bonner had to be pulled back by her teammates.

Cunningham and Bonner both received technical fouls, along with Clark, Fever forward Myisha Hines-Allen and Mercury star Alyssa Thomas.

Cunningham talked about the heated incident after the game. The Fever veteran acknowledged the heated moment, but highlighted how the Fever maintained their composure to close out the win.

“I think sometimes that’s part of the game,” she said. “I think we kept our heads; I think we could have stopped it a little bit sooner. But at the end of the day, we kept our heads, we finished the ballgame well, and that’s what we need to do moving forward.”

There’s some history between Cunningham and Bonner. Last year, after Bonner forced her way out of the Fever, Cunningham admitted she expected some explanation from her. “It’s okay to be professional about it and send a text to your teammates,” Cunningham said.

The Fever guard said on Monday, however, that this is no longer on her mind.

“It’s old news, old news,” Cunningham stated. “No, and we never will, and I really don’t care anymore.”

The 29-year-old went on to say that such in-game altercations are “okay.” She added that, “It’s okay for women to stand their ground a little bit and to have some extracurricular at times, because you have to hold your ground.”

Cunninham made it clear that the most important thing was that the Fever came out on top. Indiana secured the home win, 86-77.

“Yeah, it’s done. We got the W. Who cares?” Cunningham concluded.

Cunningham and Bonner will face off again on Wednesday. The Fever will host the Mercury in a rematch at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
