Stephanie White reveals Fever’s contingency plan ‘in case of emergency’

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White (R) talks to injured guard Caitlin Clark

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has remained fluid with her player rotations so far this season. The former WNBA Coach of the Year has acknowledged that for some of her players, their time on the court is more situational and depends on game-to-game matchups.

Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston remain as Indiana’s Big 3. And for the most part, the trio has played like such. However, consistency has been an issue not only for their three main stars, but for pretty much the entire squad as well.

The Fever’s 4-4 record is a testament to this notion. They have also lost two games in a row heading into Thursday’s matchup against Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream.

The good news for White and the Fever is that it’s still early in the WNBA season. There’s still so much basketball to play before the 44-game regular season transitions into the playoffs.

While there’s no denying that the Fever still have a lot to work on at this point in the campaign, there is also no need to panic right now.

Stephanie White speaks on Indiana Fever’s developmental players

White has a couple of emergency players up her sleeve. This comes in the form of the Fever’s two developmental contracts, which is a new addition this season by virtue of the new CBA. Teams across the league have two developmental slots in addition to their 12-woman roster.

The major caveat, however, is that developmental players are allowed to play only a maximum of 12 games in a season. Rookie forward Justine Pissot and second-year guard Bree Hall are Indiana’s two developmental players. Neither of them has played in 2026.

“Right now it’s a case of emergency,” White said of Pissott and Hall’s status. “I mean, we’ve got a pretty deep team.

“Using it as an opportunity for them to understand and learn about being a pro, to continue to, you know, get stronger, to continue to learn the system and be ready in case we need them, and continue to grow their game.”

Injuries will play a significant role in Pissot and Hall getting an opportunity to crack the rotation. Last year, the Fever battled through a major injury crisis that forced them to rely on backup players throughout the season.

The team is much healthier this season — at least so far — and they hope to avoid a similar situation to 2025. However, in the event of an emergency, the developmental players will be ready.
