There could be cause for concern for Sophie Cunningham

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever moved Sophie Cunningham out of the starting unit earlier this season to provide more bench scoring. While she has had an up-and-down campaign so far, her impact goes beyond what stat sheets show.

The veteran guard joined the team last year following a trade from the Phoenix Mercury. She quickly adjusted to Indiana’s system and embraced the enforcer role. Her grit on the court gave the Fever toughness and a reliable backcourt contributor. Cunningham will continue to play a key role this season.

Her strong relationships with her teammates will also be a major factor in meeting Indiana’s goal of a deep playoff run and a potential championship.

Indiana Fever release Sophie Cunningham’s status for Sky game

Fever fans received some concerning news on Wednesday. The team released its injury report for Thursday’s game against the Chicago Sky, with Cunningham listed as questionable due to a right elbow issue.

However, the good news is that she still has 24 hours to receive treatment. Caitlin Clark is probable to play.

This is the first mention of Cunningham’s elbow injury. The team have yet to release the full details of the issue

Head coach Stephanie White is still giving Cunningham 22.9 minutes per game despite not starting. Cunningham is averaging 8.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. The team is expected to announce her final status for Thursday closer to tip-off, which they will closely monitor.

Meanwhile, Indiana is coming off a 78-76 win over the Washington Mystics on Monday. Cunningham delivered the perfect cross-court inbounds pass to Clark for the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left. The victory pushed the team’s record to 6-5 for the season.

The Fever will play six of their next eight games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, giving them a stronger chance to string wins together. They will then embark on a four-game road trip that includes two matchups versus A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces.
