Camp Notes: Tyler Loop Bails Out the Offense
Lamar Jackson was up and down throughout the day, with Rashod Bateman being a letdown a couple times. Jackson finished the day 3-for-4 during 11-on-11 drills, with a possible hold on Marlon Humphrey being the lone incomplete pass. Lamar would then go 3-for-6 during 7-on-7s, with drops from Bateman and Josh Cuevas, who also had a day to forget. Keyon Martin recorded a PBU on a pass intended for Bateman.
Tyler Huntley actually looked the best out of the quarterbacks today, while obviously running with the second team. During 11-on-11s, Huntley finished 6-for-8, before going 4-for-6 with a TD during 7-on-7s. Elijah Tau-Toliver was his most reliable target, hauling in a diving grab and a TD.
Skylar Thompson and the third-team offense were tough to watch. Thompson went 3-for-5 during 11-on-11s, with a sack, PBU, and nothing but easy checkdowns. The 7-on-7 portion for Thompson featured a near-INT on his first pass, but he was able to bounce back well, finishing 4-for-6 in the session.
Red Zone
The lone highlight for the offense during their red zone period was Tyler Loop‘s ability to pick up points on stalled-out drives. Jackson and the offense went three and out on their first attempt, including a PBU on a tight-window throw from Lamar.
Huntley and the second team picked it up during their opportunity, including a big 15+ yard run from Huntley on first down. Tez Walker came up with an impressive bobbling catch, but unfortunately watched it get called back due to a false start from the offensive line. The drive would end with another Cuevas drop and a Tyler Loop field goal.
-The third team couldn’t get anything going. Inaccurate passes, limited time in the pocket, and a secondary hungry to make plays haunted Thompson and company. They’d go three and out, and relied on a 56-yard field goal from Loop to highlight the drive.
Coaching Interviews
Special Teams Coordinator Anthony Levine Sr said Tyler Loop has taken a different approach during this training camp, as he now has a year under his belt.
Anthony Levine Sr, spoke highly of second-year safety Keondre Jackson, but knows he’s still got more potential to reach. When asked if Jackson has “found that rhythm,” Levine replied, “I feel like Keondre is in a rhythm; I don’t know if he’s found the rhythm.” He highlighted his focus and energy, stating he “loves where he’s at right now.”
Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle said he’s still deciding whether or not to call plays from the coaching box or on the sideline. He stated his plan as of now is to call plays from the booth during the Ravens first preseason game, which is at home. In game two, he plans on going down to the sideline on the road, before re-evaluating. He stressed the importance of communication between players and coaches, and getting these preseason games is a great opportunity for a dry run.
