Chicago Cubs jump into a top-3 spot of latest MLB power rankings
The Chicago Cubs got the second half of the 2026 off to a great start, taking two out of three against the Minnesota Twins over the weekend. They are now 56-43 on the season, and still sit in second place of the National League Central Division.
The next couple of weeks will be incredibly important for Chicago, as they navigate the MLB trade deadline and try to add the pitching they so desperately need to keep pace in the National League. As it stands, though, they have one of the best records in the league, and are shooting up MLB power rankings.
The Chicago Cubs take over third on the latest MLB power rankings
Last week, Bleacher Report had the Cubs listed as fifth in their final MLB power rankings going into the All-Star break. After Chicago took two out of three from Minneosta, though, they have them all the up to third:
“The Cubs have not lost more than two consecutive games since June 10, going 22-9 in their last 31 contests since snapping what was a three-game losing streak. It’s a testament to their offensive firepower and elite defense that they have played so well during that stretch despite a glaring need for more starting pitching, and that figures to be the top priority at the trade deadline.”
The good news for the Cubs is that slumping offensive stars Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner appear to have finally figured it out at the plate. This alone will go a long way to help them avoid the low valleys that plagued them in the first half of the season.
That being said, if Chicago is not able to add multiple quality pitchers ahead of the MLB trade deadline, they could be in serious trouble. So many pitchers on their roster have suffered significant injuries, and they will not be able to make a deep postseason run if they do not get some healthy arms as reinforcements.
