Chicago White Sox: Jeff Passan reveals team’s dream trade target ahead of MLB deadline

The Chicago White Sox are 48-45 so far in the 2026 MLB season. Prior to the start of the year, many believed that they would, once again, be one of the worst teams in the American League. After all, they had lost more than 100 games in three consecutive seasons, and they decided to rely on their young group of players to carry them this year.

As it has turned out, that was a great decision by the club. Chicago is just one of a handful of American League teams over .500. They also sit in first place in the AL Central, though the Cleveland Guardians are right at their heels.

As the MLB trade deadline draws closer, there are a plethora of rumors surrounding the White Sox and who they may try to acquire. ESPN analyst Jeff Passan has identified the one player they should target.

Reid Detmers named as the dream trade target for the Chicago White Sox

Recently, Passan published an article in which he listed the dream trade target for each MLB time. When it came to the White Sox, he named Los Angeles Angels pitcher Reid Detmers as not only their dream target, but also the best fit:

“Detmers, the 27-year-old who isn’t a free agent until after the 2028 season, is an ideal fit. Don’t let his 4.13 ERA fool you. The stuff is premium, the strikeouts are plentiful and the ability to carve good lineups is vital for any potential White Sox playoff run.”

What is also appealing about adding Detmers is that he is not going to be a free agent until 2029. That means the White Sox would not be getting him as a rental, but as a long(ish)-term piece for their starting rotation.

At the same time, though, his multiple years of club control remaining mean that he may cost a little bit more on the trade market in terms of prospects.
