Knee-Jerk Reactions: Ravens Sign C Ethan Pocic on 1-Year Deal
The Ravens reportedly agreed to terms with free agent center Ethan Pocic on a one-year deal Friday afternoon.
Sources: Former Browns center Ethan Pocic, who started 97 games in nine NFL seasons before tearing his Achilles last year, is signing a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Pocic is said to be healthy, and he will have a chance to replace former Ravens center Tyler… pic.twitter.com/B2e7ycmZ4z

Almost like they had a plan, knew this was a possibility & had everything lined up to make the signing.
Pocic is perfect because he could theoretically be eased in. They have options in the meantime for those reps in camp, preseason. Probably the last hole left for EDC.
The amount of panic that they didn’t have a vet center by now drove me bonkers.
Now they have a nice group for Ledford to work with. With this, plus the guard upgrades, OL play has plenty of potential.

As I stated in my OTL yesterday, “for all we know, the Ravens starting center might not even be on the roster at the moment.”
Fast forward just a few hours, and Baltimore has come to terms with one of the top free agent centers remaining on the market. Pocic is coming off a torn Achilles tendon suffered in Week 14 against the Titans, but has been medically cleared as a “full go” for training camp. In 518 pass-blocking snaps last season, Pocic allowed 2 sacks, 3 QB Hits, 9 QB Hurries, and 14 total pressures.
According to Ian Rapoport, it’s a 1-year deal that can reach a max value of $4.5 million, a low-risk/high-reward signing for a the center-needy Ravens. The Ravens get some much-needed experience at the position, as Pocic has started in 97 games across his 9-year NFL career. It’s a drastic difference from what the Ravens had fighting for the position during OTAs, with Danny Pinter having started 10 games while Jovaughn Gwyn and Corey Bullock have yet to notch a start under their belt.
At first look, it’s a real solid signing for Baltimore, who could use all the help they could get at the position. It’ll be interesting to see if the Ravens put Pocic on a ramp-up period to start camp, or if he’ll truly be a full go come Day 1.

The move made too much sense. A fully healthy Ethan Pocic has proven he can still play at a solid level. He allowed 14 pressures in 518 pass blocking snaps and is a serviceable run blocker. Low risk, high reward. The worst that happens? He doesn’t pan out and you use Corey Bullock or Danny Pinter, who are not substantially inferior options.
The move gives Baltimore an experienced player at their biggest position of need. Great addition.

Eric DeCosta delivers maybe the best possible option in a tough situation after failing to find a center in the draft. Landing an average starting center with plenty of experience in the AFC North is about as ideal as it could get considering the circumstances. Not giving up draft capital and being patient paid off. While he ranked much higher as a run blocker last year than a pass blocker, overall he’s an average starting center.
Which happens to be great news for the Ravens.
