Camp Notes: A Hot One at the University of Maryland
It was a hot Saturday afternoon at SECU Stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland, as the Ravens took the field for camp practice number four. The defense dominated Friday’s session, creating pressure throughout the session.
Attendance: 20,185
— It appeared to be a rest day for multiple veterans, as running back Derrick Henry, tackle Ronnie Stanley, defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike, and center Ethan Pocic all donned street clothes. Trey Hendrickson was also absent.
— Linebacker Teddye Buchanan, defensive lineman Travis Jones and John Jenkins remain on the PUP list and were inactive, while Bilhal Kone was a participant again.
Practice Observations
— Rasheen Ali, Dayton Wade, Adam Randall, Matthew McDoom, Dontae McMillan, and Elijah Tau-Tolliver all took part in punt and kick returns.
— Lamar Jackson and Zay Flowers connected on a couple of plays during 7-on-7, with Jackson finishing 4-of-5. His lone incomplete pass was a near INT with both Nate Wiggins and Malaki Starks forcing the incompletion. Snoop Huntley was slinging it, finishing 3-of-4, leading Ja’Kobi Lane a little too far on his lone incompletion. Skylar Thompson just continues to limit his chances of pushing the ball down field. On his four pass attempts, only two were completed, both for fewer than five yards.
— 11-on-11 was a bit rocky for the Ravens first team. On the very first play, Jackson connected with Andrews down the sideline, for the veteran tight end’s biggest play of camp. On the very next play, 2nd year safety Keyon Martin came up with a pick, with Zay as the intended target. Jackson finished 2-of-3 during his session.
— Tyler Huntley is clearly the Ravens’ second best quarterback. He’s put together a really solid camp. He started 7-of-7 during 11-on-11, but back-to-back “sacks” killed the drive. Zion Young would’ve been credited with the second.
— With Derrick Henry partaking in a rest day, Rasheen Ali and rookie Adam Randall got some serious looks in the backfield, both with the first and second team.
— Skylar Thompson picked it up in the team’s final session, but wasn’t able to receive much help up front. He started 2-of-2, including a 15+ yard play to Randall, but that was unfortunately followed by a David Olaiga sack and an Evan Beerntsen false start.
Interviews
— HC Jesse Minter said the pads will be on Monday, while tomorrow will be an off day.
— Jackson stated being under center isn’t something he’s regularly done since youth football, but he’s feeling comfortable with it. Declan Doyle credited his ability to play from the gun, pistol, and under center following Friday’s practice.
— I asked Lamar if there’s any difficulties playing under his now third OC in nine years. He said it’s just a new system that he’s “trying to learn like the back of [my] hand.”
— I asked Malaki Starks what an addition like Jaylinn Hawkins does for his second year. He stated Hawkins’ versatility and play-making pops on film. He’s excited to have an addition like that in the trio.
–Tavius Robinson highlighted Trey Hendrickson’s mindset and work ethic when I asked about what his addition brings to a pass rush room with Robinson and Green. Tavius said he spent the six weeks with Hendrickson leading up to camp, by “getting into his mind and learning his habits.”
