Camp Notes: Defense Comes Out On Top Again in Hot, Loud, & Physical Session

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Yesterday’s rain ushered in some stifling heat today in what was a fast, physical, and loud padded practice.

The defense certainly had the upper hand early on. Tavius Robinson and Broderick Washington recorded back-to-back “sacks,” and then T.J. Tampa forced a fumble on Rasheen Ali who was headed upfield after catching a screen pass.

Kyle Hamilton was naturally all over the place today, recording a few “sacks” of his own.

Zion Young showed off his pass rush later on, quickly beating Gerald Lichtenstein. You can see the physicality in his game, and he’s certainly been up to the challenge so far.

Mike Green stacked another good practice, and outside linebackers coach Harland Bower spoke about Green afterwards. “The game is slowing down (for Green). When the game slows down schematically for you, now your God-given ability can show and shine. And that is what you are seeing, I believe, on the field. You will see that this year.”

Robinson also continues to impress. He looks much less like the talent-hopeful edge rusher we saw early on, and more like a consistent threat.

Keondre Jackson, the Ravens’ best special teamer from last season, has also looked very instinctual during camp. He blanketed LaJohntay Wester on an out route and deflected the pass away during 11-on-11s.

Keyon Martin had his hands full with Zay Flowers today. The two have gone back and forth throughout camp, and while Flowers had a few short grabs today, Martin also forced a nice breakup where he didn’t allow Flowers to get two feet down.

Elijah Sarratt had his most notable practice so far. He caught a few passes, but the biggest play came when he hauled in a slot fade from Tyler Huntley 25+ yards downfield.

The Ravens ran a late-game drill in which the offense had a minute and 25 seconds, and it sputtered out when Durham Smythe caught a pass over the middle but the spike didn’t come until time expired. Lamar Jackson threw his helmet in frustration after the conclusion.

Other than the first few days, it seems like most of these practices have been defensive “wins.” This unit is certainly in a different place than it was a year ago.

Tyler loop was seemingly 6-for-6 on kicks on the day (it’s tough to tell from our angle, and there are no refs giving a signal), with the longest coming from 61 with some leg to spare.
