Camp Notes: Flowers Returns, but Nate Wiggins Carted Off
It was a fairly messy day for the offense, but the biggest storyline of the day came early in practice when Nate Wiggins went down at the end of a 1-on-1 rep against Ja’Kobi Lane. The two appeared to have gotten their legs tangled up. The cart came out immediately and Wiggins rode off.
Jesse Minter had no update after practice, and said everyone would know more shortly.
In other attendance news, Travis Jones was back on the field for the first time, though he didn’t participate in any team drills. Zay Flowers, Aeneas Peebles, and Keyon Martin were all back at practice as well.
QB Skylar Thompson, RB Rasheen Ali, WR Rashod Bateman, WR Dayton Wade, ILB Carl Jones IV, DB Jahquez Robinson, and ILB Teddye Buchanan (PUP) were absent.
Lamar was down his two primary receivers (Flowers only did individual work, and Bateman was absent, as noted above), which may provide a little insight into his struggles today, but the secondary really shined.
Marlon Humphrey was one of the defensive stars of practice. He was in the middle of a few pass breakups and looked solid in his assignments all day. It was a refreshing change for Humphrey, who’s had a poor camp to this point.
T.J. Tampa also continues to fly around the field confidently. We’ve seen him use his length to get his hands on passes and he did so efficiently again today.
The Ravens had reportedly received multiple offers for Tampa over the last 10 months or so, but held onto the 2024 fourth-rounder out of Iowa State. That decision looks especially astute today, as if Wiggins misses time, Tampa would likely slide into the starting lineup as an outside corner.
John Jenkins had a few good reps on inside runs, a good sign for the 37-year-old, who just recently came off the PUP list.
I’m truly excited to see Adam Randall in the preseason. His camp runs have been ultra-physical, lowering shoulders and putting his head down. When he can really go full speed in the first preseason game this weekend, Randall could be a playmaker.
Lamar didn’t by any means look bad today – he got to his checkdowns and didn’t make any dangerous throws – but it was a clear win for the defense, who covered extraordinarily well downfield in almost all of the team periods.
