Chicago Bears: Justin Fields caught a stray from former teammate
Months before the Chicago Bears selected Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft, cornerback Jaylon Johnson was vocal in his support for Justin Fields, arguing that he wasn’t the problem with the team’s lack of success on offense and in the win column.
Fast forward to training camp in 2026, and Johnson appears to be much happier with Williams in the locker room.
When speaking to reporters on Saturday, Johnson praised Williams, suggesting he was the best quarterback the Bears had in the locker room since Nick Foles was last in Chicago in 2021.
“Honestly, this is probably the best offense I’ve had in seven years as far as going against them for sure,” Johnson said, via ESPN. “They’ve got a lot of speed and then really just, Caleb’s the best quarterback I’ve had since, maybe Nick Foles if you want to go back that far. Just as far as slinging it, he’s doing his thing.
“You can see the accuracy. You can see the confidence throwing the ball in tight windows is something that’s stood out to me. I just feel like top to bottom, they’re a confident group. … And it’s what we need to go against on defense. … It’s going to be a fun camp.”

More News: Ben Johnson has surprising stance on WR position battle
Johnson didn’t say Fields’ name directly, but praising Foles as the second-best quarterback on the Bears’ roster since 2020, when Johnson joined the team, could feel like a dig to Fields, now a backup quarterback on the Kansas City Chiefs.
It’s not only Fields, who the Bears traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 before getting a chance to be a starter with the New York Jets in 2025, who could be embarrassed by those comments. Johnson was a rookie during Mitch Trubisky’s final season with the Bears.
Trubisky has since spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Tennessee Titans to back up Cam Ward this year.
While there’s an argument to be made that the Bears hurt the development of Fields and Trubisky, Williams had more talent coming out of college than both. Chicago hurt Williams’ development as a rookie by keeping Matt Eberflus as its head coach.
Thankfully, Ben Johnson was able to come in early enough to aid Williams before he became another bust in a long list of such quarterbacks for Chicago.
