Jets Camp Report: Geno Smith Sharp as Training Camp Comes to an End
That’s a wrap from Florham Park. The final Jets practice took place on Tuesday, ending four weeks of work before the focus shifts completely to the regular season. The final practice had plenty of competitive work, including positional drills, 7-on-7 and extended 11-on-11 periods. Geno Smith finished Jets camp with one of his better practices, while Adonai Mitchell continued to show the chemistry with Geno that we have been writing about throughout the summer. On defense, Kingsley Enagbare put together an impressive stretch, and David Bailey finished his first NFL training camp the same way he started it, making plays.
General Notes – Jets Camp
- This was the final practice of Jets training camp and was a long one, it ran was scheduled from 12:25pm – 2:55pm but ran a few minutes long.
- The secondary spent part of the positional period working specifically on interceptions.
- The Jets also worked on kickoff teams before moving into the competitive portions of practice.
- Breece Hall, Isaiah Davis, Kenyon Sadiq and D’Angelo Ponds continued working on the side as they make their way back from injuries.
- The Jets continue to target Week 1 for Hall, Sadiq and Ponds.
- Nahshon Wright has returned to full participation after dealing with a hip injury earlier in camp.
Geno Smith Finishes Jets Camp Strong
Geno Smith has had a very good camp overall, and he finished it on a high note Tuesday. The offense moved the football through the air, with Geno spreading it around to Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, Omar Cooper Jr., Mason Taylor and Braelon Allen. The Jets official practice report had Mitchell with six receptions, Wilson with five and Cooper with four. Braelon Allen also caught a touchdown from Geno, going up to make the catch near the goal line. There weren’t many incompletions throughout the team periods, and the passing game looked efficient.
That has really been the theme with Geno and Frank Reich’s offense throughout camp. It hasn’t always been about huge plays. Geno has generally looked comfortable, gotten the football out, and takes what the defense gives him. Tuesday was another good example of that.
Adonai Mitchell Continues to Impress
Mitchell has been one of the more consistent offensive players throughout camp, and he had another good day Tuesday. The Jets credited him with six receptions from Geno, the most of any receiver during the team periods.
The chemistry between Geno and Mitchell has been noticeable since the early days of camp. Garrett Wilson is obviously going to be the focal point, but Mitchell has given the Jets another legitimate option on the outside. His ability to stretch the field should make things more difficult for defenses that want to devote extra attention to Wilson.
One stand out play took place on a deep completion down the left sideline where Geno hit Mitchell in stride.
Mason Taylor Makes the Catch of the Day
Mason Taylor provided one of the best plays of the final practice during 7-on-7 work. Geno went to Taylor down the left sideline with Minkah Fitzpatrick in coverage. Taylor went up over Fitzpatrick and came down with the football for an impressive catch. It was exactly the kind of play you want to see from a tight end against an experienced safety like Minkah.
Taylor has quietly put together a good finish to camp. With Kenyon Sadiq still working his way back, Taylor will have an important role early in the season and he seems ready for it.
Kingsley Enagbare Gets After the Quarterback
Kingsley Enagbare had one of the better defensive stretches of practice and deserves to be mentioned among Tuesday’s standouts. When they aren’t tackling, it is hard to tell what is a “sack”. I had Enagbare down for two and the Jets credited Enagbare with two sacks and a tackle for loss. One sack came against Geno Smith, and another came against Cade Klubnik. Will McDonald and Braiden McGregor also got to Klubnik as the pass rush consistently created pressure.
The edge rotation has been one of the more interesting stories throughout camp. Joseph Ossai is back, David Bailey has been making plays since the opening week, and Will McDonald is fighting for his share of the snaps. Enagbare making a push of his own gives Aaron Glenn another option to work with.
David Bailey Makes Another Big Play
David Bailey has been one of the biggest stories of Jets camp, so it was fitting that he made another impressive play on the final day. Geno dumped the football to Braelon Allen during 11-on-11 work, and Bailey diagnosed the play immediately. He closed quickly and dropped Allen for a four-yard loss. Bailey was in Geno’s face on another passing attempt. Was it a sack or not? Really hard to tell when the QB is rocking the red jersey.
What has impressed me about Bailey isn’t simply his ability to rush the passer. We have watched him make plays against the run, chase plays down from behind, and make plays when he drops into coverage. There is more to his game than simply lining him up on the edge and telling him to get the quarterback.
Braelon Allen Gets More Work
With Breece Hall still working on the side, Braelon Allen continued getting plenty of opportunities with the offense. Allen had some productive runs during the team periods and scored both on the ground and through the air. His receiving touchdown came on a six-yard pass from Geno where Allen went up and secured the football near the goal line.
The running game is still something I want to see more improvement from once the regular season begins. Getting Breece back will obviously help, as will the eventual return of Isaiah Davis. The bigger question is whether the offensive line can consistently create enough room inside for this group.
Cade Klubnik
Klubnik had some good moments Tuesday, including a completion to Arian Smith and another example of his athleticism when he took off for a run of more than 20 yards. The second-team offense also had trouble protecting him at times. There were multiple “sacks”, including plays by Enagbare, McDonald and McGregor.
We’ve seen the same thing from Klubnik throughout camp. He is a rookie, and there are going to be mistakes, but his mobility is legitimate, and he hasn’t looked overwhelmed by the opportunities the Jets have given him. The preseason finale against the Giants will give him one more extended opportunity before the regular season begins.
Players of the Day
- Geno Smith: Finished camp with a sharp practice and spread the football around throughout the team periods.
- Adonai Mitchell: Looked smooth out there today; he has been impressive.
- Kingsley Enagbare: Two sacks and a tackle for loss highlighted an impressive day rushing the passer.
- Mason Taylor: Made the catch of the day over Minkah Fitzpatrick during 7-on-7. This one was ESPN highlight-reel worthy.
- David Bailey: Another tackle for loss and another pressure to close out an impressive first NFL training camp.
Final Thoughts From Jets Camp
Four weeks of Jets camp are officially in the books. Now we get to find out how much of what we saw this summer carries over when the games actually count. They close out the preseason Friday night against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, and after that the attention turns to Week 1.
