OTL: Several Camp Battles Come Down to the Wire

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The 2026/2027 NFL season can’t come soon enough, and fans are already counting down the days:

Even with one preseason game and joint practices with the Washington Commanders yet to unfold, the Ravens Flock has their sights set on cut day and are wondering how positional battles or final roster spots will pan out. While this year’s squad seems to have fewer major controversies, there will always be some.

Perhaps most important is the Center position, where a season ending injury to Danny Pinter has left things wide open. Now, it seems to be between veteran Ethan Pocic (coming off a serious injury) and Dwayne Ledford disciple Jovaughn Gwyn (little previous experience):

For me, the position is a primary concern, even though Pocic may be turning the corner toward being a full go. You never know how things will go after serious injuries, especially with such tread on the tires.

On the opposite side of the ball, this year’s fan favorite seems to be OLB Ethan Burke. The Texas product has flashed, particularly in last week’s matchup with the Vikings:

But has he done enough to make the team? It’s a nice thought, but I don’t think so. The Ravens obviously bolstered things with EDGE Trey Hendrickson, but also added rookie Zion Young in the draft. With clear improvements from Mike Green, as well, the numbers crunch gets tighter:

Throw in the potential to move LB Trenton Simpson around the field and the draft capital invested in OLB Adisa Isaac, and Burke has an uphill battle:

I expect to see him on the Practice Squad, with potential for occasional elevations.

Last comes the secondary, where Baltimore seems to have too much depth, if that’s even possible. While one of CBs Nate Wiggins, Marlon Humphrey, and Chidobe Awuzie will likely need to step into the “lockdown” role, the slot is another critical area with questions. Ideally, Humphrey and S Kyle Hamilton could handle duties there, but rookie Chandler Rivers and former UDFA Keyon Martin have both impressed:

I think both make the roster, but don’t expect either to see regular playing time, at least until late in the year. That’s because of the addition of Jaylinn Hawkins, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday!

After a strong year in New England, Hawkins joins as the third safety, but will provide ample cover for Hamilton to help HC Jesse Minter and DC Anthony Weaver move him around the field. Don’t get it twisted, though – Hawkins is no slouch:

Minter should get the most of Hawkins and the rest of the secondary, and I expect to see that early next season. Assuming he can, it could impact the offensive side of the ball, as well:

It’s always so much fun seeing which names jump out in the preseason. With that in mind, how would you answer this series of questions from Jonas Shaffer?

My answers are below:

  • Most pleasant surprise in Ravens camp: Ja’Kobi Lane
  • Most concerning position: Center
  • Center with the most 2026 starts: Jovaughn Gwyn (hence my concern)
  • Confidence in Tyler Loop: 6.5/10
  • Lamar Jackson’s camp grade: 8.5
