After 26 years as a scout, Mike Shirley resigns from Chicago White Sox
In September 2019, Mike Shirley was promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting for the Chicago White Sox. Before taking on the role, Shirley had steadily climbed the organization’s scouting ranks. He served as a cross-checker from 2010 to 2018 after spending six years as a full-time area scout in the Midwest from 2004 to 2009. His tenure with the organization began even earlier, as he worked as a part-time scout prior to the 2000 season and was an associate scout for the Minnesota Twins during the 1999 season.
After overseeing the White Sox’ last six MLB Amateur Drafts, including the selections of Garrett Crochet in 2020, Colson Montgomery in 2021, Hagen Smith in 2024 and Roch Cholowsky in 2026, Shirley’s tenure with the organization has come to an abrupt end. According to The Athletic, an investigation into allegations of verbal harassment ultimately led to Shirley’s resignation.
The White Sox have yet to comment publicly, but the organization reportedly launched an internal investigation following anonymous complaints about Shirley’s conduct at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California in August. The Athletic also reported that several previous incidents involving Shirley’s behavior had been brought to the organization’s attention, though none had resulted in disciplinary action.

Shirley’s resignation on Saturday, without the context of the allegations surrounding his departure, could initially have been seen as a move that would allow him to pursue another opportunity. However, the circumstances surrounding his exit make that scenario far less likely in the immediate future. The Athletic also reported that Shirley was believed to have signed a contract extension with the White Sox earlier this year before the investigation began.
With that in mind, Shirley’s 26 years of experience and track record within the White Sox organization will remain significant parts of his resume. However, the circumstances of his resignation are likely to make other organizations hesitant to bring him into another prominent scouting or front-office role, at least in the near term.
