Chicago Bears tie franchise record with insane first half against Carolina Panthers
The Chicago Bears were on a roller coaster ride in the first half against the Carolina Bears. But when the dust settled, Chicago held a 31-24 lead heading into the break.
Head coach Ben Johnson is looking to orchestrate one of, if not the most explosive offense in the NFL. With 31 points in the first half, the franchise proved those hopes are legit. Chicago also tied a longstanding franchise record, via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.
“The 31 points for the Bears are tied for their most ever in the first half of a season opener. They also had 31 in 1948 vs Packers,” Dubow wrote.
For all their success on offense, the Bears hit numerous road blocks on defense. The Week 1 matchup is the fifth season opener in NFL history where both teams scored 24+ points, via Dubow.
“Bears and Panthers have 5th season opener with both teams scoring 24+ points in 1st half,” Dubow wrote. “Also:
2018: Bucs 31, Saints 24
1994: Chargers 27, Broncos 24
1971: Cowboys 28, Bills 24
1963: Colts 28, Giants 24”
Both the Bears and Panthers have been throwing punches all game. Who lands the knockout blow is yet to be seen. It certainly hasn’t been the cleanest game for both franchise. But Johnson, quarterback Caleb Williams and company are looking to ride their scorching offense to a win.
