Chicago Bulls may have just found the answer to their shooting woes with Buddy Hield trade

The Chicago Bulls are set to begin preseason play in a few weeks, with the new NBA season right around the corner.

Expectations are modest for the Bulls, as they’re entering the new campaign with a completely revamped roster. They added veterans like Nic Claxton and Norman Powell, who will hopefully provide a much-needed offensive punch.

In addition, Chicago drafted forward Caleb Wilson. He will surely bring excitement to the city, as the high-flying athletic freak has looked great since being selected fourth overall this summer. He’ll team up with first-year head coach Tiago Splitter, whom the Bulls hired this offseason. Splitter will look to build off his impressive run with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2026.

Just a few days ago, the Chicago Bulls made another trade, acquiring guard Buddy Hield and cash considerations from the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets will receive young guard Rob Dillingham in the trade, as he’s still trying to find his footing in the NBA.

For the Bulls, trading for Hield will improve their shooting as a whole. Hield will likely come off the bench and has been widely known as one of the best shooters in the league since he was drafted in 2016. For a team that needed offense, Hield will provide exactly that. Bryson Graham is doing what he promised.

You could argue Dillingham fit the Chicago Bulls’ plan a bit more than Hield does. He’s 21 and has shown some signs of progression, but this front office clearly thought otherwise.

Hield can come right in and contribute. The one initial concern with the deal was Hield’s contract, which included a player option for the 2027-28 season. However, even with the contract being partially guaranteed, Hield is an expiring deal, a league source confirmed. He’ll turn 34 in December.

This will be Buddy Hield’s 7th stop in 11 NBA seasons. The former 6th overall pick has had a successful career thus far, and the Bulls seem to believe he has some left in the tank.

As mentioned earlier, he’s nearly a 40% shooter from three during that time and can get hot at any moment. His most recent stop was with the Atlanta Hawks, where he played in just seven games. Before that, Hield had been providing solid shooting for the Golden State Warriors, as many thought he’d found a home for the time being.

Unfortunately, that’s not how this league works.

If nothing else, the former Oklahoma Sooner Hield will add more veteran leadership to this young core. His ability to stretch the floor should help open things up for Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis, both of whom need to work on their outside shot.

Last year, the Bulls ranked 19th in three-point shooting percentage (35.6%) during the regular season. As the game has changed, this is a number that’ll need to improve, especially if they want to make a postseason run this winter.
