Did Caitlin Clark, Stephanie White call each other out after Fever’s blowout loss?

The start of the Indiana Fever’s playoffs did not go according to plan on Sunday, losing Game 1 to the Las Vegas Aces 102-85. Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White addressed the media after the game, and some thought they called each other out.

The three-time All-Star guard finished with 15 points and 10 assists. However, she struggled from the field, knocking down just 6-of-17 shots and committed six turnovers. Aliyah Boston led the team with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Kelsey Mitchell contributed 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

Indiana had 16 turnovers, and while it matched what the Aces totaled, its defense gave up a lot of easy baskets. A’ja Wilson feasted with a game-high 38 points on 78.9% field goals, along with 16 rebounds, two steals and four blocks. Jackie Young added 21 points and 10 assists, and Chelsea Gray supplied 14 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

During their postgame presser, Clark and White both discussed what the Fever failed to do during Game 1. A clip of their comments was posted on X, and the account suggested that they fired shots at one another. The 2024 Rookie of the Year stressed that their plays were not great and called their on-court actions “sloppy.”

“They’re good defenders, but at the same time, like, we made it hard on ourselves, too,” Clark said. “I thought our actions were sloppy. I thought what we were running just wasn’t great, and nobody got an easier open look. So I think a combination of both, but got to keep shooting at this point in the air. It is what it is.”

White responded by highlighting Las Vegas’ points off turnovers and free throws.

“I mean, 28 points off of turnovers,” White said. “Your first line of transition defense is offensive execution, and 28 points off its turnovers and 17 points on the free throw line. Those are easy buckets… There’s no defense for 28 points off of turnovers. We’ve got to be better screen setters. Our timing and our pace, because they’re going to force us to play in the half court, has to be better. We didn’t do our job.”

The player-coach duo have often been rumored to have a rift this season. However, they have also publicly praised each other and continued to do their jobs. Indiana needs to put the Game 1 loss behind them quickly as Tuesday is a do-or-die matchup. It’s also the only game of the series that will be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
