Breaking: NFL suspends Chicago Bears EDGE rusher Montez Sweat for two games
Entering Week 6, the Chicago Bears are 3-2 and are coming off their most embarrassing loss of the season. They were routed 31-7 by their rival Green Bay Packers on Sunday and will look to turn things around this weekend against the Atlanta Falcons.
On defense, it was their worst showing of the season. They allowed multiple explosive plays and failed to disrupt QB Jordan Love in any capacity.
Unfortunately, they’ll be without a key piece of this unit for the next two games, as EDGE rusher Montez Sweat was suspended by the NFL today. He violated the league’s Performance-Enhancing Substance abuse policy, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

That means he will miss Sunday at Atlanta and the following Thursday vs. New England.

This is a massive blow to a reeling Chicago Bears defense that has struggled to get to the quarterback thus far. Sweat has tallied two sacks so far in 2026 and has been a bright spot on the defensive line.
Now, some will wonder who the Bears will throw into the starting role with his absence.

Defensively, the Chicago Bears can’t catch a break. The secondary looked abysmal in Sunday’s loss, as Christian Watson had a career day. It was an embarrassment on that side of the ball.
Offensively, you can see why they’re struggling. QB Caleb Williams is set to return this weekend, and he’s desperately needed.
As far as the defensive line goes, the Bears may be looking at an upgrade. Former All-Pro Khalil Mack was rumored to be a candidate, as his Los Angeles Chargers continue to lose.
Biggs also reported that the Bears are likely to bring defensive end Shemar Turner off the PUP list to replace Sweat. His return provides a spark to a d-line that certainly needs it.
One can assume head coach Ben Johnson is not happy at the moment.
