Chicago Bears: Bad news for RB Kyle Monangai on Thursday
The good news for the Chicago Bears is that quarterback Caleb Williams appears to be trending to make his first start in Week 6 after he suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain.
The bad news: the Bears could be without one of their more impactful players on offense.
On Thursday, running back Kyle Monangai was listed as a non-participant in practice for the second day this week. ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested the Bears won’t have Monangai available against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday due to his turf toe injury.
“It also looks as if Bears RB Kyle Monangai will miss his second straight game,” Schefter posted on X.
Monangai has been a key force in the backfield this season, leading Chicago running backs with a 5.4 yards per carry average. He has 324 yards and three touchdowns on 60 carries.
Sans Monangai, the Bears rushed for just 81 yards on 24 carries in a 41-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 5.
Earlier this week, Bears head coach Ben Johnson noted that Monangai’s absence was huge against Green Bay.
“We kind of went into the game with a little bit less in the running back room than we normally do with Monangai being active and going,” Johnson said, via the Bears’ website, “and so [we were] looking to spread the load a little bit and didn’t quite get as much out of that as we had hoped.”
D’Andre Swift had a solid performance against Green Bay, rushing nine times for 43 yards and adding 30 yards on four receptions. Roschon Johnson didn’t play well in Monangai’s role, rushing five times for six yards.
The Bears will be missing a cylinder on offense until Monangai returns.
Chicago should have a boost to its passing attack with Williams under center. Whether that formula is enough for the Bears to beat Atlanta remains to be seen.
