Chicago Bears make unsurprising final injury announcement before Falcons clash

Chicago Bears Ben Johnson

All eyes will be on quarterback Caleb Williams’ injury status heading into the Chicago Bears vs. Atlanta Falcons matchup. He is questionable, for the record, after getting in three full practices during the week. Whether or not Williams starts remains up in the air.

But the quarterback wasn’t the only one reeling entering the Week 6 clash. Cornerbacks Kyler Gordon (calf) and Tyrique Stevenson (hip) both share the questionable tag. But they at least have a chance to play. All four of linebackers TJ Edwards (hamstring) and Keyshaun Elliott (quad), running back Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) and defensive lineman Dayo Odeyingbo have been ruled out, the team announced.

Edwards and Odeyingbo, two staples on Chicago’s defense, have been defined as week-to-week. Their absences will deliver a significant blow to the Bears any game they miss. Head coach Ben Johnson and company will at least hope to find some better luck in the secondary.

On offense, not having Monangai will take a bit of thump out of Johnson’s arsenal. But he’s remaining optimistic that the running back’s absence won’t extend much longer.

Johnson still considers Monangai week-to-week as he battles through his turf toe injury. But injured reserve hasn’t yet come into the equation. And the running back has passed every test asked of him thus far, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

“Trending in the right direction,” Johnson said.

While Monangai doesn’t have a direct timeline, the fact he isn’t being placed on IR means the Bears don’t believe he’ll miss four or more games. The running back will ultimately need to return to practice before regular season play is considered again. But if Johnson’s projection comes true, that should happen sooner rather than later.

In the four games he has appeared in, Monangai has run for 324 yards and three touchdowns. His 5.4 yards per carry is sixth-best in the NFL.

The Bears won’t have their rising running back against the Falcons. But perhaps he’s a more realistic option in Week 7 against the New England Patriots.
