Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams accused of ‘false flag’ injury boogeyman
Last week, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams made it clear that he didn’t appreciate the way the media presented news about his hamstring injury, and disagreed about much of the reporting about the actual injury itself.
Hours after Williams was injured in the Bears’ 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Williams suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Viral clips of Williams writhing in pain were mocked on social media, with some in the media questioning his toughness.
Per multiple reports, Williams suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain.
On Tuesday, Florio told 670 The Score his version of events, noting the ESPN report on the timeline for Williams’ return of four weeks was correct. Florio took Williams’ comments last week to be something from the playbook of Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan, who would find anything he could for inspiration.
Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams is finding his motivation

“I just think it’s funny,” Florio said. “I mean, to the extent that Chicago is looking for an athlete to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan, this is Jordan-esque. Let’s go out and create a false flag boogeyman that we can use as motivation. Make stuff up if you have to. That’s Jordan. So that’s the silver lining in all of this.”
The motivation seemed to work against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, when he went 30 of 36 passing for 305 yards and one touchdown in the Bears’ 31-23 win to improve their record to 4-2 on the season.
It’s important to remember that the Bears and head coach Ben Johnson didn’t help Williams in the immediate aftermath of the injury. For one, they never disclosed the actual grade of the injury. In addition, Johnson played games with Williams’ availability in the injury report, and didn’t immediately rule him out for Chicago’s Week 3 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.
