What Real Progress Should Look Like for the New York Jets

Real progress for the New York Jets should be something fans can see on Sundays without needing a press conference to explain it. A defense that makes quarterbacks uncomfortable. An offense that gives its play makers opportunities. Young players becoming reasons to believe. Jets fans have spent enough time studying rebuilding plans. At this point, they should qualify for college credit.

They have also learned to read the fine print. Whether someone is checking the terms of an online casino promotion through Covers or deciding how much faith to put in another football rebuild, the details matter. For Aaron Glenn and the Jets, those details are on the game film.

There is a recognizable vision here. Glenn wants a physical team, an aggressive defense, and an offense that can establish the run. There is talent to work with, too. The challenge is getting the decisions on Sunday to consistently match the team they say they want to become.

Aaron Glenn’s Defense Needs to Keep Quarterbacks Guessing

Glenn’s defensive vision is easy to get behind. Bring pressure. Mix coverages. Make the quarterback sort through different looks and force him into decisions before he is comfortable making them.

When it works, it is fun to watch. The win over Cleveland provided a welcome reminder of that. The Jets generated pressure, brought rushers from different spots, and gave the Browns plenty to deal with. That is the kind of afternoon Glenn wants to make familiar.

There have also been stretches when the defense has been far too comfortable to play against. The Jets have leaned heavily on man coverage, and at times the overall approach has felt conservative enough for opposing quarterbacks to settle in and pick them apart.

Playing man coverage demands a lot from the secondary. If the rush does not arrive and the quarterback understands the matchups, those defensive backs have a long afternoon ahead of them. Mixing in different coverages, disguising pressure, and changing the picture after the snap can help keep an offense from finding that rhythm.

Glenn does not need to send the entire parking lot on every third down. He does need to make the quarterback wonder who is coming. An aggressive identity should create hesitation on the other sideline.

The Offense Has Talent. Let It Breathe.

The Jets want to run the football, and there is nothing wrong with that. Breece Hall and Braelon Allen give them good reasons to build around the ground game. A productive rushing attack can control stretches of a game and create opportunities downfield.

The injuries, however, are making the job harder. Hall, Adonai Mitchell, and Omar Cooper Jr. have all missed time, taking speed and options away from the offense. Cooper’s return to practice is an encouraging step, but this group has already spent too much time trying to assemble its preferred lineup from the injury report.

That deserves consideration when evaluating the offense. It also makes creativity more valuable. Garrett Wilson remains someone defenses have to account for, Allen has shown he can handle meaningful work, and Geno Smith can do more than hand the ball off and hope third down is manageable.

Some of the offense’s most encouraging stretches have come when the Jets have opened things up and allowed Geno to attack. His 32-yard touchdown pass to Wilson against Cleveland was a reminder that this offense can create something beyond a long, exhausting argument with the first-down marker.

The Jets should give him more opportunities to find that rhythm. Use play-action. Throw on early downs. Make defenses defend the width of the field. Give the receivers chances to make plays before the situation becomes third-and-obvious.

Protecting the football matters. So does making the opponent defend an offense with more than one answer. A commitment to running the ball should leave plenty of room for trusting the quarterback.

The Interior Offensive Line Needs to Be Part of the Long-Term Fix

If the Jets want a physical offensive identity, the interior offensive line has to be a priority. Long term, that group needs upgrades and enough depth to withstand the injuries that inevitably arrive.

Running backs need room before they can create anything. Geno needs space to step into his throws. Pressure straight up the middle can wreck both plans in a hurry, and it limits how confidently a coordinator can call the game.

Another offensive weapon will always generate more excitement than an investment at guard. Consistent blocking, though, would make every weapon on this roster more dangerous. It would also make life easier for whoever is taking snaps in the years ahead.

David Bailey Looks Like Someone They Can Build Around

David Bailey is giving Jets fans something worth getting excited about. His three-sack performance against Cleveland showed the kind of disruption that can change a game and force an opponent to adjust its protection plan.

That is a valuable starting point for Glenn. A pass rusher who can win his matchup gives a defensive play caller options. He can create pressure without requiring extra rushers every time, and he can make a well-timed blitz even more difficult to handle.

Now comes the next stage of Bailey’s development. Can he produce consistently as opponents pay more attention to him? Can he develop answers when his first move gets stopped? Can he become a dependable run defender while continuing to chase quarterbacks?

Those are the steps that turn an exciting young player into a cornerstone.

There is also a culture opportunity here. If Bailey’s preparation, effort, and production keep growing together, he can become the kind of player Glenn points to when explaining the standard. Teammates notice who does the work and who delivers when the game is on the line.

Jets fans have heard plenty about changing the culture. Watching a young defender repeatedly ruin an opponent’s afternoon would be a pretty convincing presentation.

Give Fans Something They Can Recognize Every Week

Glenn does not need every question answered immediately. He does need the Jets to develop habits that hold up from one opponent to the next.

That means a defense that adjusts when quarterbacks find answers. An offense that uses its available talent with confidence. A serious commitment to improving the interior line. And young players like Bailey becoming more complete as the season moves along.

Wins matter, and nobody watching this franchise needs another lecture about patience. The encouraging part is that there are pieces here worth developing. The frustrating part is how often the Jets still seem reluctant to find out what those pieces can do.

Let the defense dictate more of the action. Give Geno room to attack. Keep building around players who can change games.

Jets fans can handle a team growing through mistakes. They would just appreciate seeing the growth without having to squint.
