Shelley Duncan Bails On Yanks For Lack Of Accountability & Direction

And not leadership is fleeing. Message to Yankee fans everywhere; Boycott this stale, floundering team.

The Yankees can develop a baseball mind. Apparently, recognizing when to promote one is beyond them.

Shelley Duncan is reportedly headed to Boston’s major league coaching staff after four seasons managing the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate. He earned International League Manager of the Year honors in 2025. Now the Red Sox get his experience while the Yankees get to explain why continuity remains so wonderful. Again.

Good for Shelley. Shame on the Yankees.

Duncan put in the work. Managing prospects, handling roster turnover, teaching players who are trying to reach the majors while keeping a team competitive—those jobs require more than looking reassuring during a television interview. His résumé includes managing throughout the minors and working in major league coaching and analytics roles. He has earned a serious opportunity.

Meanwhile, Aaron Boone remains the face of an organization that seems increasingly offended by the suggestion that results should threaten somebody’s employment.

In my opinion, Boone is the dumbest manager in Major League Baseball when it comes to the distinction that matters most: understanding that defending your players and accepting their mistakes are two different things.

Support should make a team stronger. Under Boone, I see too much reassurance and too little evidence that the same problems are being corrected. Eventually, the soothing explanations become insulting. Fans can recognize sloppy baseball without a postgame interpreter telling them why everything is fine.

Pinstripes Nation, citing an unnamed insider, reports that Duncan disagreed with the organization’s approach to accountability and saw little opportunity to advance with Boone entrenched. The outlet also reports that New York did not offer him a major league coaching position. Those claims deserve attribution; they are not Duncan’s public explanation. But if accurate, they describe an organization so comfortable with its hierarchy that it allowed an accomplished internal coach to find his next opportunity in Boston.

That is organizational arrogance.

Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman own this, too. Boone does not appoint himself. Every season they retain him, they endorse the standard he represents. They cannot keep choosing the same leadership and then act surprised when fans hold that leadership responsible.

The Yankees sell their history at championship prices. They should expect their present operation to be judged against something more demanding than whether everybody in charge still likes working together.

Duncan would not have come with a championship guarantee. Nobody does. But he offered experience, credibility and a different voice—qualities worth making room for before a division rival does it for you.

Instead, Boston reportedly found a place for him.

And Shelley should go there with his head high. There is nothing disloyal about accepting an opportunity to grow. A career should not become a waiting room for someone else’s endless vote of confidence.

The Yankees can keep congratulating themselves on their mediocrity. I see a front office protecting its judgment, an owner accepting the explanations and a manager whose greatest job security appears to be the organization’s refusal to admit it might need someone better.
