The History Channel’s Ancient Alienshows are smudged all over the channel and I catch them as often as I can…not because I agree with the program’s premises but because they offer views that by substituting “aliens” with the words “gods” viewers would have continuing treatises on religion.
The various hosts are atheists? Maybe. Maybe not.
Last night [10/12/19] the program noted the argument from “Intelligent Design” which is engraved in AA theories and a suggestion that I like, even in the face of scholarly indigestion about it.
And I like Giorgio Tsoukalos; maybe it’s the hair.
The problem for me is that the AA idea the “gods” from various texts (mostly religious, of course) are actually extraterrestrials flies in the face of the texts and their contexts.
The ETs suggested by AA theory don’t arrive in the texts as advanced beings but slightly mad entities with warlike or oblique intentions and purposes, something we humans have come to see as the personalities of the gods that religious materials present.
Why the AA crowd can’t accept the long-time view that it’s the gods all along that have parlayed their madnesses into myth and/or holy scripture(s).
Gods slipping into our human existence and responsible for it makes more sense to me, especially with the concurrent “evidence” of paranormal activities and creatures, than the idea that extra- terrestrial creatures found this obscure planet, among all those in the Galaxy or Universe, and came here in droves (and still may be coming) to exploit it for obtuse reasons (advancing DNA) and goods (gold, for one).
Yet, the AA/ET view with its overlay of actual beings has got to make more sense to secular oriented persons, who don’t see God or gods as a real possibility.
These are not atheists but persons using what visitor Phil here calls common sense, even though commons sense tells us that travelers from afar or outer space hanging around or visiting Earth in numbers that astound is itself irrational, without common sense.
We believers in gods or God are also sustained by the AA suggestion that Darwin’s Evolution Theory is flawed or not quite sustainable in all its parts as one might think; some creatures, as the repeat show last night pointed out, fall outside the evolutionary path or have no connective links with anything that might account for their continuing and evolutionary existence.
(The Octopus was highly praised as an ET introduction to Earth but, while the octopus is rather alien in context with other Earth creatures, one can see it as an insertion from a mischievous god – Posiedon? – or a Darwinian fluke and not a fly-in from an extra- terrestrial tribe.)
No. Ancient Alien (Astronaut) believers are interesting speculators, but not convincers for those of us steeped in the waywardness of God or gods.
