Political Vanity: America’s Most Dangerous Sin

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Is God Laughing With Trump… Or Laughing At Him

There’s a word that cuts through all the noise of modern politics. One word that explains the corruption, the overreach, the endless circus in Washington. That word is vanity.

Not the kind where a politician just preens in front of a camera… though Lord knows we’ve got plenty of that. We live in the age of gold-plated Trump Tower with a man’s name bolted on in letters taller than your barn.

We live in an era of executive orders signed with a Sharpie the size of a sword, held up for the cameras like a war trophy. But nothing — nothing — captures American political vanity quite like what happened on Good Friday 2024.

Printed in China. Sold to Christians. Called holy.

On the holiest week of the Christian calendar, the man asking for your vote posted on Truth Social: “Happy Holy Week! Let’s Make America Pray Again.” Then he directed you to a website where you could buy his personally endorsed Bible for $59.99. The “God Bless the USA Bible” … the only one in existence bearing his official endorsement. Printed in China, by the way, for less than three dollars a copy, then flipped to his own supporters for sixty bucks. Later he started signing them. Signed copies now fetch a thousand dollars. As if he wrote it.

That’s not a man honoring God’s word. That’s a man monetizing it. And the Bible has a word for that: vanity.

The Nations Rage — And God Laughs

Psalm 2 opens with a question that cuts like a blade. “Why do the nations rage, and the peoples meditate a vain thing?” David asks it like a man watching something so absurd he can barely believe his own eyes. The kings of the earth are gathered. They’re scheming. They’re taking counsel together… against the Lord and against His anointed.

And God’s response? He laughs.

Picture it. The most powerful men on earth, in their marble palaces and gilded towers, shaking their fists at heaven. And the Almighty sits up there and laughs. Not a nervous chuckle. Full-on derision. Because from where He sits, the nations are a drop in a bucket. Dust on the scales. The whole spectacle is so small, so futile, so vain… it’s almost funny.

Almost. Because verse 5 is coming, and it isn’t funny at all.

The Real Plot Against Freedom

David isn’t just describing personal arrogance. He’s describing a political philosophy. A governing outlook. The kings and rulers of the earth, he says, are united in one aim: “Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their cords from us.”

Cut the cords. Break the bonds. No real strings attached to God.

That’s the real agenda underneath every secular political system… left, right, and everything in between. We don’t want God’s law. We don’t want God’s Son. We want to define good and evil for ourselves. We want to be — here’s the precise theological term — autonomous. A law unto ourselves.

Many of us voted for Trump in 2024 believing he’d finally cut through the rot. And to be fair, some things moved… the border tightened, certain cultural agendas got pushed back. But watch closely what happened next. Approval ratings cratered. Prices didn’t drop on day one like promised… they climbed. Farmers who carried his signs got gutted by tariff chaos. Small business owners who trusted him got left holding supply chain bags.

And instead of humility, we got a man selling signed Bibles for a thousand dollars a pop and $399 gold sneakers called “Never Surrender High-Tops” to the very people who couldn’t pay their grocery bills.

That’s not a servant of God wielding the sword righteously. That’s a man meditating a vain thing.

America’s Long Walk Into Vanity

Not a golden calf… certainly vain golden B.S.

Walk through Washington D.C. sometime and pay close attention to what you’re actually seeing. The Jefferson Memorial rises up in its double marble colonnades… modeled deliberately after the pagan temples of ancient Greece. Jefferson right in the center, enshrined like a deity. It’s not subtle. It’s a temple to a man who took a razor blade to his own Bible, literally cutting out the miracles because they offended his “enlightened” sensibilities.

That’s where we started drifting. And we’ve been drifting ever since.

Now a president hawks the Word of God on the same platform where he sells NFT trading cards and branded cologne. The “God Bless the USA Bible” bundles the King James Version with the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and a handwritten chorus from a Lee Greenwood country song. The Constitution and the Sermon on the Mount between the same covers. God’s eternal law yoked to a patriotic jingle and sold for profit.

If that doesn’t illustrate the vanity of mixing man’s kingdom with God’s, nothing will.

In Jeremiah 5, God uses the same imagery David uses in Psalm 2 when He diagnoses Israel’s collapse: the great men had “broken the yoke and burst the bonds.” They stopped knowing the way of God. They ditched His law. And the nation rotted from the inside out. Sound familiar?

The Vanity That Bankrupts Nations

Look at our court system. It’s drowning under frivolous lawsuits because we abandoned the clean, clear standard of God’s law. Look at our prisons. We lock men up, they come out worse… angrier, harder, more dangerous… while the taxpayer foots the bill for every meal and every cot. We’ve rejected biblical justice and replaced it with expensive warehouses of misery that reform nobody.

Farmers out here in rural Illinois know this better than any Beltway commentator. You can’t tell a man what to grow, how much to sell it for, and to whom… and then call it the land of the free. The Constitution’s been bent like a green sapling to protect pornographers and predators, while Christian schools and home-school families are still harassed by state bureaucrats.

Cops show up after Facebook posts. Raw milk producers get raided. But the corporate ag giants? They get the subsidies and the sweetheart deals.

That’s not left-wing vanity or right-wing vanity. That’s American vanity. And it’s been building for generations.

The Vanity of Expecting a Man to Do God’s Work

Here’s where disappointed Trump voters need to sit with something uncomfortable. The problem was never just Biden, or Obama, or the deep state. The problem is what Psalm 2 diagnosed three thousand years ago: we keep looking to kings to do what only the King of Kings can do.

We put our hope in a man with his name on skyscrapers, his face on gold coins, his brand on a $60 Bible printed in China. A man who told us he alone could fix it. And many of us — my own hand raised right here — believed it enough to pull that lever. Twice.

But a man who stamps his name on the Word of God and sells it for sixty dollars has already told you exactly who he thinks is sovereign. And it isn’t the Author of that Book.

Paul writes in Romans 13 that rulers are “ministers of God.” That’s an awesome and terrifying responsibility. It means the sword they carry isn’t theirs… it’s on loan from heaven. When they wield it for personal glory, for empire-building, for hawking merchandise to the faithful who trusted them… they’re not just failing us. They’re failing God. And the wrath of Psalm 2 doesn’t have a partisan exemption. It doesn’t matter if you’re holding a Bible or selling one.

God’s Three-Part Answer to Political Vanity

Trump recently posted this on Truth Social.

Psalm 2 lays out God’s response plain as day. First, He laughs — verse 4, the divine derision already described. But the laughing stops fast. Verse 5 brings the wrath: “Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.”

History doesn’t lie. Empires that enshrined their own wisdom above God’s law eventually ate that wisdom and found it poison. Rome fell. The Soviet Union collapsed.

There’s no reason — none — to think America gets a permanent pass. When the coalition that swept Trump back into office is fracturing at the seams, when his own base is calling it betrayal… maybe that’s not just a political problem. Maybe that’s a Psalm 2 problem.

Then verse 6 brings the victory. “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” Despite all the raging. Despite all the gold-stamped branding and marble monuments and rally crowds and Bibles with country song choruses tucked inside… God’s Son rules. He’s already asked for the nations as His inheritance. You think He forgot? The One sitting at the right hand of the Father with all authority in heaven and earth doesn’t forget His prayers. And the kingdoms that stand in the way don’t get moved gently.

The Only Way Out

The off-grid community understands something most Americans have been conditioned to forget: you cannot trust a system that answers only to itself. When the government… or the man running it… becomes the final word on what’s right, what’s grown, what’s taught, what’s just… you’re not free. You’re managed.

Real freedom has always required a law above the state. A standard that the king himself must kneel before. That’s not naive idealism. That’s the only honest foundation for liberty that’s ever actually worked. That was William Wallace’s belief.

David’s conclusion is simple. God’s conclusion is simple. Kiss the Son. Bow the knee to Christ as King… not just on Sunday morning, not just in your private devotions, but in your politics, your courtrooms, your schoolrooms, your fields. Serve Him with fear. Rejoice with trembling.

Because the alternative… whether it wears a blue tie or a red one, whether it governs from Mar-a-Lago or a San Francisco penthouse, whether it carries a Bible or sells one… is just a fancier, more expensive version of chains. It’s vanity. Empty glory. Borrowed time.

America’s been meditating that vain thing long enough. We voted for men when we needed to bow before the King. God’s wrath, the psalmist warns about, always gets kindled.

Kiss the Son, before the rod of iron does the talking.
