War… Covenant… And The Judgment of Nations
War is one of the most revealing realities in human history.
It strips away political rhetoric, exposes the faith commitments of nations, and demonstrates that no society can escape the consequences of its governing theology. From a biblical perspective, war is never merely military. It is fundamentally religious. Men fight because they worship different gods, serve different visions of order, and pursue competing claims of sovereignty.
The bible consistently argues that every social order rests upon an ultimate faith commitment. The question is never whether a nation is religious, but which religion governs it. Modern humanism claims neutrality while enthroning the state as the supreme authority.
Biblical faith, by contrast, affirms that all nations are accountable to the sovereign God of Scripture.
As the contemporary conflict between the United States and Iran unfolds, Christians must resist simplistic narratives. The issue is not merely geopolitics, economics, oil routes, or military alliances. The deeper question concerns the sovereignty of God in history and the accountability of nations before His law-word.
The Biblical Meaning of War

Scripture does not present war as an accidental feature of history.
Rather, war is a consequence of man’s rebellion against God. Following the Fall in Genesis 3, violence became a recurring feature of human society. By the time of Genesis 6, the earth was described as filled with violence, prompting divine judgment through the Flood.
Yet Scripture also reveals that God uses war as an instrument of judgment. The conquest of Canaan, described throughout the book of Joshua, was not imperial expansion but covenantal judgment upon societies whose wickedness had reached maturity.
Likewise, God raised up foreign powers to chastise Israel when His people abandoned His law. The Assyrian invasion was described as God’s rod of anger in Isaiah 10. The Babylonian conquest likewise served as divine judgment upon covenant-breaking Judah in Jeremiah 25.
The Scriptures also emphasized that history is governed by God’s providence. Therefore, wars cannot be understood merely through military analysis. Nations may identify immediate causes, but behind those causes stands the sovereign decree of God.
This does not mean every side in a conflict is righteous.
Scripture repeatedly demonstrates that God judges both aggressors and victims. Babylon itself was later judged for its arrogance in Jeremiah 50–51, even though it had previously served as God’s instrument against Judah.
The Myth of Neutral Foreign Policy
One of the most important aspects of a good reading of the Bible is its rejection of neutrality. Modern political theory assumes nations can operate apart from theological commitments. Scripture denies this possibility.
Every nation embodies a doctrine of sovereignty. Either God is sovereign, or man is sovereign. Either God’s law governs public life, or some human authority claims that role.
The modern American republic was historically shaped by biblical assumptions concerning law, liberty, and limited government. However, over the past century, increasing secularization has shifted authority from God to the state. The result has been a foreign policy often driven by strategic interests rather than covenantal principles.
Iran represents a different religious order. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian state has explicitly grounded its political authority in Shiite Islamic theology. Thus, the conflict between the United States and Iran is not a clash between a religious society and a secular one. It is a confrontation between rival faith systems, each possessing distinct visions of authority, law, and social order.
R.J. Rushdoony would likely insist that Christians avoid viewing either nation as a covenant nation in the biblical sense. Both stand under God’s judgment. Both are accountable to His law. Both demonstrate forms of rebellion against biblical truth.
The Current U.S.–Iran Conflict
The present conflict has escalated significantly during 2026.
Military exchanges, drone attacks, missile launches, and strikes against strategic installations have repeatedly threatened broader regional war. Recent reports indicate renewed clashes involving U.S. forces and Iranian military assets near the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and intermittent ceasefire arrangements. Regional instability has affected Gulf states, international trade routes, and energy markets.
The conflict follows months of warfare that began with large-scale military operations involving U.S., Israeli, and Iranian forces, leading to significant regional disruption and continuing negotiations over sanctions, security arrangements, and Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
From a Biblical perspective, however, the significance of these events extends beyond military calculations. Scripture teaches that nations reap what they sow. The principle stated in Galatians 6:7—that a man reaps what he sows… applies corporately as well as individually.
When governments abandon God’s standards of justice, they create conditions that eventually manifest in social unrest, economic instability, and military conflict. The rise of statist power, revolutionary ideologies, and militant religious movements are symptoms of deeper covenantal rebellion.
I would like to caution against interpreting the conflict merely through nationalist categories. Americans naturally focus on American interests. Iranians focus on Iranian interests. Scripture instead directs attention to God’s interests, God’s kingdom, and God’s justice.
Lessons from Biblical History
The Bible contains numerous examples of international conflict that illuminate the present moment.
The war between Israel and the Philistines demonstrates that military superiority cannot compensate for covenantal unfaithfulness. When Israel treated the Ark as a magical object rather than submitting to God, defeat followed, as recorded in 1 Samuel 4.
King Asa’s reliance upon foreign alliances rather than God brought prophetic rebuke in 2 Chronicles 16. Likewise, Judah’s repeated attempts to secure political salvation through Egypt rather than covenant obedience were condemned throughout the prophetic literature, especially in Isaiah 30.
These examples reveal a consistent principle: military strategy cannot substitute for righteousness.
Modern nations frequently assume that security arises from technological superiority, intelligence capabilities, economic sanctions, or strategic alliances. Scripture repeatedly teaches otherwise. “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord” (Proverbs 21:31).
The Judgment of Humanistic Empires
You should be warned that centralized states almost always seek messianic power. They promise security, prosperity, and peace while increasingly concentrating authority in human institutions.
The modern international order frequently treats military power as the ultimate guarantor of stability. Yet history demonstrates the limits of such confidence. Ancient Egypt fell. Assyria fell. Babylon fell. Persia fell. Greece fell. Rome fell.
Each empire believed itself indispensable. Each discovered that sovereignty belongs only to God.
The prophetic books repeatedly portray God’s judgment upon nations that exalt themselves. The downfall of Assyria is described in Isaiah 14. The humiliation of Babylon appears in Daniel 4, where Nebuchadnezzar learned that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men.”
A good Bible-based analysis of the U.S.–Iran conflict would have to reject triumphalism on all sides. Military success does not necessarily indicate divine favor. Temporary victories may precede future judgment.
The Christian Response to War
How then should Christians respond?
First, believers must reject the idolatry of nationalism. Love for one’s country is legitimate, but ultimate allegiance belongs to Christ alone.
Second, Christians should pray for peace while recognizing that true peace cannot exist apart from righteousness. The prophet declared, “The effect of righteousness will be peace” in Isaiah 32:17.
Third, believers must understand that the advance of God’s kingdom does not depend upon military victory. Christ’s kingdom grows through the proclamation of the gospel, faithful discipleship, and obedience to God’s law.
Fourth, Christians should interpret international events through the lens of God’s providence rather than media narratives. The central question is not merely who wins or loses militarily, but what God is accomplishing in history.
Biblical Lessons Are Clear
From my perspective, war reveals the spiritual condition of nations.
The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran is not merely a geopolitical struggle. It is another chapter in humanity’s long attempt to establish order apart from God’s sovereign rule.
Scripture teaches that nations rise and fall under divine providence. The lesson of biblical history is clear: no military alliance, political ideology, or technological advantage can secure lasting peace apart from submission to God.
The current crisis should therefore drive Christians not to fear, but to renewed faithfulness. As wars and rumors of wars continue, believers must remember that history is not governed by presidents, generals, ayatollahs, or diplomats. History belongs to Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords, whose reign extends over every nation and whose purposes cannot be thwarted.
In that confidence, Christians can view even the turbulence of international conflict with hope, knowing that the Judge of all the earth will do right and that His kingdom alone will endure forever.
