The operational backbone of the Huaneng Ruichi fleet is provided by Huawei Technologies, which supplies the autonomous driving systems despite ongoing US sanctions. The trucks leverage 5G-Advanced (5G-A) connectivity, also known as 5.5G, to achieve download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and upload speeds of 1 Gbps, ensuring low-latency real-time control essential for heavy machinery safety.  Beyond connectivity, the system integrates AI algorithms, cloud computing platforms, and high-accuracy mapping to navigate the mine without human intervention.  This technological stack allows the vehicles to make split-second decisions regarding pathing and load management, showcasing a domestic Chinese supply chain for critical AI and semiconductor technologies.The successful deployment was a collaborative effort involving key industrial and academic players. Alongside Huaneng Group and Huawei, the project included Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG), a leading heavy machinery manufacturer, and the Beijing University of Science and Technology, which likely contributed to the research and development of the control algorithms and system integration. This consortium highlights a coordinated approach between state-owned enterprises, private tech giants, and academic institutions to advance China’s capabilities in electric vehicles, AI, and smart mining infrastructure. Based on operational data released by XCMG in late 2025, the fleet of 100 autonomous trucks at the Yimin mine had completed 47,800 battery swaps in approximately six months of operation (from May to November 2025).  Extrapolating this performance to a full year of continuous 24/7 operation indicates an annual volume of roughly 95,000 to 100,000 battery swaps for the entire fleet.The high swap frequency is driven by the trucks’ intense utilization rate, operating up to 22 hours a day with minimal downtime.  Each individual truck undergoes a battery swap approximately every 5 to 6 minutes when needed, with the automated stations achieving an operational success rate of over 98%.  This rapid turnover allows the fleet to maintain high productivity without the long charging delays associated with plug-in electric heavy machinery, effectively replacing the need for shift changes required by human drivers. These nearly 100,000 annual swaps facilitate the exchange of massive 568 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs, enabling the fleet to consume over 43 million kWh of electricity annually.  This electrification strategy eliminates the consumption of approximately 15,000 tonnes of diesel per year and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 48,000 tonnes, equivalent to planting 2.6 million fir trees.  The swapping infrastructure is critical to maintaining the fleet’s 20% higher efficiency compared to traditional manned diesel trucks.
