7 Tips for Students: Eat Healthy on a Budget
Newly arrived in student life, really leaving the halls of Hotel Mama for the first time, the euphoria in the new apartment was quickly clouded. The stomach growled and there was nothing in the fridge but a yawning emptiness!
Then off to the supermarket. When I arrived, my shopping basket contained almost everything you buy if you don’t know how best to take care of yourself: Frozen pizza – not the good one – no, a three-pack of Margaritha for $1.70, pasta and Bolognese to mix for $1.10 in total.
So that this fate does not overtake you, I have researched and found out how to eat well easily and cheaply.
Tip 1: Canteen Food Is Getting Better and Better
The quality of the cafeterias has increased considerably in recent years. Fresh dishes that are not only healthy but also taste good! Of course, with increasing quality, the price of the dishes has also increased. But I think that 3 euros for a healthy meal is a reasonable price. For this reason, I would advise you to use the canteen at lunchtime, but to take care of dinner and breakfast, as well as snacks in between, yourself.
Tip 2: Plan Meals
If you don’t have the biggest wallet, it doesn’t mean that you can’t eat a healthy and balanced diet! Good planning is the motto here. Compare offers and with a little look at the country of origin, you can also do something for the environment with products from the region. For example, if you’re a fan of pumpkin soup, you can make it in October, freeze it and enjoy a bowl of soup in December too.
Tip 3: Cheap and Healthy Carbohydrates
Potatoes, whole grain rice, and whole-grain pasta not only contribute to a balanced diet, but they are also cheap. They have a longer shelf life and excellent dishes can be prepared quickly with the help of spices and fresh vegetables.
Tip 4: Seasonally Instead of Annually
Since we have to watch our wallets and don’t want to pollute the environment too much with the items we have flown in, we should primarily eat seasonal fruit such as apples in winter. They are full of important nutrients such as potassium and iron and it is not for nothing that they say: “one apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Quinces, walnuts, and chestnuts are also welcome snacks in winter and autumn.
Tip 5: Meat and Fish Only Once a Week
Meat and fish are about quality, not quantity. Care should be taken to buy good and fresh meat or fish. A piece of meat from the deli counter that is not too greasy won’t bleed your wallet too much. Eating too much meat can lead to high cholesterol anyway and can increase the risk of heart disease.
Tip 6: Frozen Food Is Also Healthy
But you can also buy many things from the freezer, such as peas and broccoli as well as spinach, etc. The fruit and vegetables are snap-frozen immediately after harvesting, with almost all the nutrients and vitamins being retained. However, ready meals from the chest and from the tin should be left where they are, as they have usually not been cooked gently and are full of sugar. Only at the festival, canned ravioli are of course a must!
Tip 7: Tasty and Healthy Recipes for Little Money
When choosing my recipes, I chose my two favorite pumpkin dishes that go with the season.
Pumpkin soup:
- 1 butternut or Hokkaido squash
- vegetable broth (no cubes)
- 1 cup cream or soy cream or coconut milk (200 ml)
- nutmeg
Peel the pumpkin (doesn’t have to be, but it takes longer to cook) and remove the seeds. Cut the pumpkin into pieces (about 5 cm x 5 cm) and wash. Then put the squash in a pot of water. Cook the squash over medium-high heat until softened (10-15 minutes), depending on the size of the pieces. Then puree the pumpkin with the cooking water and season with broth and nutmeg and add the cream. Then boil again briefly.
Of course, we wish you a good appetite and hope our contribution has shown you that it is not that difficult to eat healthily.
