UK: Deadheading – A Film

Deadheading is a darkly comic tale of love, sacrifice, and the extraordinary lengths we go to for those we hold most dear.

2026
In Birmingham, the UK’s second city, an elderly couple faces their toughest chapter. Jim, a retired roofer, learns he has only months left to live. His lifelong dream has always been an allotment garden where he can finally plant his roses. But after 18 years on the waiting list, they remain number 6 in line. Determined to grant him this final wish, his devoted wife Doreen takes matters into her own hands. Armed with knitting needles, sponge cakes and a deceptively sweet smile, she begins snuffing out those ahead of him. Deadheading is a darkly comic tale of love, sacrifice, and the extraordinary lengths we go to for those we hold most dear.
Director Statement
When I set out to write and direct Deadheading, I knew from the outset that I wanted to tell a story that put elderly characters at its heart. Too often, older actors are relegated to the periphery of short film, playing caricatures or footnotes in stories centred on younger protagonists. With Deadheading, I wanted to do the opposite. To craft a film that not only gives them the spotlight but also showcases their complexity, humour, and vitality. The principal cast of this film is made up mostly of actors over 65, and I couldn’t be more excited about what they bring to the project.
The film’s story, an elderly woman stopping at nothing to fulfil her dying husband’s dream, felt like the perfect blend of dark comedy and heartfelt devotion. As a lifelong fan of British dark comedies, I’ve always been drawn to their ability to mix humour with something more unsettling. Films like The Ladykillers (1955), Theatre of Blood (1973), and Sightseers (2012) have this wonderful balance of the absurd and the macabre, and I wanted to take inspiration from that tradition while also giving it a modern sensibility. Deadheading is my attempt at a love letter to that genre – playful, a little twisted, and ultimately deeply human.
One of the things that was really important to me when writing this script was to show a healthy, loving relationship on screen. So often, films (particularly short films), rely on conflict between partners to drive the drama, but I wanted to do the opposite. Doreen and Jim are deeply in love, and that love is unwavering. Their relationship isn’t the struggle of the story, it’s the reason for it. Instead of using their marriage as a source of tension, I wanted to show the strength of their bond and let the real tension come from Doreen’s increasingly extreme efforts to make Jim’s final dream a reality.
At its core, Deadheading is about love, devotion, and the lengths we go to for the people who mean the most to us. It’s a dark comedy, yes, but it’s also a deeply human story, one that I hope will make audiences laugh, gasp, and maybe even shed a tear. More than anything, I hope it reminds people that love, in all its forms, is worth fighting for.
