Bloodshed and Chaos in West Bengal: BJP Positioned to Reap the Political Dividend

West Bengal is entering another period of political turbulence in which violence, internal party tensions and growing mistrust between opposition forces could produce an outcome that extends far beyond the immediate tragedies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite not being responsible for every confrontation or killing, is positioned to benefit politically from a crisis that is increasingly fragmenting its principal rivals.

The immediate trigger is a series of deeply troubling incidents that have intensified political recriminations across the state. The death of former Deputy Speaker and veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Asish Banerjee has exposed allegations, internal pressures and lingering post-election bitterness within Mamata Banerjee’s party. Reports surrounding a suicide note attributed to Banerjee have provided the BJP with political ammunition to portray the TMC as an organisation struggling with internal dysfunction.

Such claims must be treated cautiously. The circumstances surrounding any death require investigation, and a suicide note—however politically consequential—cannot by itself establish responsibility for the pressures an individual may have experienced. Yet politically, perception can move faster than evidence. For the BJP, the episode creates an opportunity to reinforce a longstanding narrative: that the TMC is increasingly consumed by internal conflict and unable to manage its own political house.

The second fault line is even more consequential.

The reported killing of Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his son, Abu Sufian, in Nadia has intensified an already fragile relationship between the Congress and TMC. The incident has generated accusations and counter-accusations, while reports of arrests involving individuals allegedly connected to the TMC threaten to deepen Congress suspicions of the ruling party.

Investigations remain underway, and allegations of political responsibility must not be presented as established fact before evidence is tested through due process. But politics rarely waits for a completed investigation.

Every accusation can become another weapon in Bengal’s increasingly bitter opposition politics. Congress leaders can use the killings to attack the TMC’s record on political violence and law and order. TMC leaders, in turn, have strong incentives to reject allegations and defend their organisation. The result could be a widening confrontation between two parties that, at least theoretically, share a common interest in limiting the BJP’s expansion.

That contradiction is central to Bengal’s current political equation.

The BJP does not necessarily need to win over every Congress or TMC supporter. It can gain if the opposition vote becomes divided, if cooperation between anti-BJP parties becomes politically toxic, or if voters conclude that competing opposition organisations are more interested in fighting each other than confronting the state’s larger problems.

West Bengal’s Muslim electorate makes the situation particularly sensitive.

Muslims constitute a substantial and historically important component of the state’s electorate. Political violence involving Muslim political workers therefore carries consequences that can extend beyond individual constituencies. The killing of a Muslim Congress leader could generate fear, anger and uncertainty among sections of the community, particularly if voters perceive that political parties are unable—or unwilling—to provide credible answers.

But anger does not automatically translate into a single electoral shift. It can produce consolidation, abstention, tactical voting or fragmentation. Much depends on how political parties respond and whether they can convince voters that they offer security, representation and accountability.

For the BJP, however, even fragmentation can create opportunity.

Bengal’s electoral history demonstrates the importance of opposition coordination. The BJP has spent years attempting to expand beyond its traditional support base in the state, while the TMC has remained the dominant political force. Congress and Left support has declined substantially over the past decade, leaving the opposition landscape unusually fluid.

In such an environment, political instability can have an electoral multiplier effect.

The current crisis potentially offers the BJP three political advantages at once.

First, internal controversy surrounding senior TMC figures can strengthen the BJP’s argument that the ruling party is divided and exhausted.

Second, confrontation between the Congress and TMC can make opposition unity more difficult, potentially allowing the BJP to present itself as the principal alternative rather than one contender among several.

Third, violence involving Muslim political figures risks unsettling an electorate whose voting patterns can be decisive in closely contested constituencies. If fear or distrust fragments the anti-BJP vote, the BJP could benefit even without dramatically increasing its own vote share.

None of this means that the BJP caused the violence, that the killings were part of a coordinated political conspiracy, or that voters will inevitably reward the party. Such conclusions would require evidence that has not been established.

The more immediate reality is political rather than conspiratorial: instability creates openings for organised opposition parties, and the BJP is arguably the best positioned to exploit them.

The danger for Bengal is that political competition becomes inseparable from violence and accusation. Every killing risks becoming an electoral talking point; every arrest risks being interpreted through partisan lenses; every internal dispute can become evidence of a wider political collapse.

That cycle serves democracy poorly.

The families of those killed deserve justice, not political exploitation. The accused deserve due process, and the public deserves investigations capable of surviving partisan scrutiny. Bengal’s political parties, meanwhile, face a larger test: whether they can prevent tragedy from becoming another mechanism for deepening communal anxiety and political fragmentation.

For the BJP, the calculation is straightforward. A weaker TMC, a divided Congress–TMC opposition and a fractured Muslim electorate could significantly reshape Bengal’s political battlefield.

The paradox is that the BJP may reap the greatest political dividend not from causing the crisis, but simply from being the strongest opposition force standing when its rivals are consumed by it.

Bengal’s instability therefore carries an electoral warning: when political opponents turn against one another amid violence and fear, the third force in the room can become the biggest beneficiary.
