Bulls predicted to make chaotic move after failed NBA Draft trade

Tiago Splitter, Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls own the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft, and the general consensus is that they will simply select whoever is remaining between Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson. The prevailing thought is that it will be Wilson, which would be just fine for the Bulls.

After all, Wilson has tremendous two-way potential and may very well be the best all-around talent in this class. He would also fill a major need for the Bulls as a defensive anchor on the interior.

But is it possible that Chicago will pull off a stunner?

Josh Cornelissen of Hoops Habit thinks so, predicting that the Bulls will actually select Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. with the No. 4 pick rather than taking one of the two ACC big men. What’s more, he thinks Chicago will attempt to trade down before making the selection.

“Here is where the chaos begins,” Cornelissen wrote. “The Chicago Bulls already have Matas Buzelis and Noa Essengue at forward and have a strong need at guard, and Mikel Brown has all of the traits that their new front office is looking for (to be fair, so does Caleb Wilson). They reach into the pool of guards at No. 4 after not being able to secure a trade-down package.”

Cornelissen then has Wilson going fifth overall to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Would the Chicago Bulls really select Mikel Brown Jr.?

There is no question that the Bulls could use a point guard, especially if they end up trading Josh Giddey.

But would they really pass on Wilson in the process?

Brown had a very strong campaign at Louisville this past season, averaging 18.2 points, 4.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds over 29.2 minutes per game on 41.0/34.4/84.4 shooting splits. The efficiency certainly leaves something to be desired, but it’s clear his offensive potential is through the roof.

The problem, though, is that there have been serious questions about Brown’s defense, both in terms of his physical attributes and his instincts.

Wilson absolutely does not have those issues. In fact, Wilson is so good defensively that some have even compared him to Kevin Garnett. It will be difficult for Chicago to pass on that, especially considering how much help the Bulls need on the defensive end of the floor.

It seems hard to imagine Chicago passing on Wilson, but evidently, Cornelissen doesn’t seem to believe the Bulls are too enamored with the University of North Carolina product, hence his predicted trade-down attempt, as well.
