Hours before an 18–3 humiliation against the San Francisco Giants, Cubs’ president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer tried to project calm as he addressed the looming trade deadline — measured, pragmatic, the steady voice of a front office executive who wants fans to believe the plan is still intact.

In an article by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Hoyer admitted the Aug. 3 deadline was “the furthest thing from his mind.” He acknowledged the organization needs pitching if the Cubs are still in the race, but said it wasn’t the right time to talk about it given how poorly they’ve played.

That honesty landed differently after what happened next.

After an emotional 7–6 win over the Athletics the night before, Edward Cabrera returned from the IL hoping to build momentum. Instead, he was torched. He lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits — three of them home runs. The Giants treated him like live batting practice.

But Cabrera’s meltdown wasn’t just a bad outing. It was a reminder of how fragile the Cubs’ pitching infrastructure is — and how much of that falls on Hoyer.

As the Cubs continue to flounder, ESPN Chicago’s Marc Silverman has become one of the most vocal critics of the organization. Late last month, he openly questioned Craig Counsell, asking what — if anything — the highest‑paid manager in baseball has tangibly improved.

This week, he turned his attention to Hoyer.

Speaking on his show Thursday, Silverman didn’t mince words: Hoyer is a mediocre talent evaluator, and the team he built reflects that mediocrity.

The Cubs aren’t underachieving. They’re performing exactly like the roster Hoyer assembled.

Cubs fans have been down this road before

Cubs fans haven’t forgotten the 2021 fire sale — the one Hoyer orchestrated. Kris Bryant, Javy Báez, Anthony Rizzo… all gone. Hoyer defended the teardown as necessary to reset the farm system and avoid a directionless rebuild.

Five years later, the Cubs are the Giants game showed how little margin for error Hoyer has left.

The Cubs aren’t a contender. They’re stuck in the middle — the worst place to be in modern baseball.

Hoyer’s comments were the unmistakable tone of someone who knows he’s boxed in.

• He can’t buy, not with a roster that looks more like a .500 team than a contender.
• He can’t stand pat, because doing nothing will only inflame an already frustrated fanbase.

This is the corner Hoyer painted himself into.

Trading for a high‑end pitcher like Tarik Skubal won’t magically fix the Cubs. Hoyer needs a reason to make such a trade. Right now, though, Hoyer sounds like a man hoping the offense wakes up just enough to justify making a splash.
