LIONAL DALTON: Jelly Roll Comes Full Circle

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let’s hop in the wayback machine and dust off a name that’ll make you smile if you were around for the glory days of PSINet Stadium — Lional “Jelly Roll” Dalton, No. 91, one of the unsung big fellas from the greatest defense the game has ever seen.

The Nickname

Let’s get one thing straight — nobody was confusing Jelly Roll with a tackling dummy, but the man carried some real estate around the midsection, and that’s exactly where the nickname came from. The Ravens’ own website described him as the “big-bellied defensive tackle nicknamed ‘Jelly Roll’”, and Dalton himself confirmed the story’s origin in the most Jelly Roll way possible. Years after dramatically slimming down, he told ESPN, “I tell people to just call me Jelly. The rolls are all gone.” The name was about the belly, folks — plain and simple. And the local scribes had fun with it too.

The Baltimore Sun once quipped before the 2000 season, “This may be the year that the player nicknamed ‘Jelly’ gets a chance to roll.” You can’t make that stuff up. And how’s this for a cherry on top: teammates remember him for how he stuffed the run, how much he ate, and how he exercised his bulldog Biggie on the treadmill.  And back at this time, his size-16 Super Bowl ring was the second-largest ever made, behind only William “The Refrigerator” Perry’s.

Ravens Days vs. The Nomad Years — By the Numbers (per Pro Football Reference)

In Baltimore, Jelly Roll was a rotational guy buried behind Sam Adams and Goose. Per Pro Football Reference, in four seasons with the Ravens (1998-2001), Dalton played 50 games with just 6 starts, totaling 46 combined tackles (36 solo), 9 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and 2 forced fumbles. Modest counting stats — but context matters. He was a valuable backup on a 2000 defense that allowed the fewest points in a 16-game season and spearheaded the 34-7 dismantling of the Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. Snaps were hard to come by behind that wall of humanity – a wall that I affectionately refer to as “two tons of fun”.

The money and the opportunity came calling elsewhere. He wanted to stay in Baltimore, but Denver offered more cash in 2002, and PFR shows the payoff: in 2002 with the Broncos he started 13 of 16 games and posted a career-high 29 tackles. His best statistical season came in Kansas City — in 2004 he started 13 games and racked up 4.0 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. Add it all up and his post-Ravens run (2002-2006) produced 70 games, 51 starts, 101 tackles, 8.0 sacks and 21 tackles for loss — compared to 50 games, 6 starts, 46 tackles and 1.0 sack in Baltimore.

Was he a better player after he left Charm City? The argument could be made that he was the same player with a bigger role. In Baltimore he was a role player on an all-time great unit; in Denver, Washington, KC and Houston he was a legitimate starter putting up starter’s numbers. The peak of his production came in a Chiefs uniform. The peak of his football life? Look no further than 1101 Russell Street.

“Most of my best experiences happened in Baltimore, so I always secretly wanted to come back to Baltimore after every team I played on.”

Life After Football

In 2020, Dalton published a book, “Who The Hell Are We?”, exploring identity and humanity after his travels around the world with his wife. Then life threw him the nastiest cut block imaginable. In January 2020 he was diagnosed with late-stage kidney disease, enduring dialysis five hours a day, three days a week.

Ironically, back in 1999, a Ravens employee had asked Dalton to pick a charity to support, and he chose the Living Legacy Foundation in Maryland, filming a PSA about the importance of organ donation. More than two decades later, that very choice and organization would help save his life. The foundation helped get his story on “Good Morning America”, and of course Ravens fans stepped up.

In August 2021, he flew back to Baltimore and received a life-saving kidney transplant at Johns Hopkins — the kidney coming from a 17-year-old who had died in a car accident and whose parents chose donation. Grateful, Dalton launched his own nonprofit, Jelly Roll Gift of Life, declaring “Baltimore just saved my life. This is home, man. This is the real home.”

Today, Dalton lives in Atlanta as an entrepreneur and kidney transplant survivor, committed to paying it forward to other organ donors and recipients.

Once a Raven, always a Raven.

Jelly still belongs to Baltimore.

Rolls or no rolls.
