The Chicago Bears will not have their biggest investment of the offseason after an injury in practice during training camp.

The Bears entered training camp short in the secondary with Kyler Gordon placed on the active/PUP list with a soft-tissue injury.

Chicago safety Coby Bryant suffered a hyperextended knee injury on Aug. 3. ESPN’s Adam Schefter initially reported Bryant would miss eight to 10 weeks, putting his return date around October.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said that initial report came from someone outside the building. Many took that to mean Bryant might return sooner than October.

On Tuesday, Johnson revealed worse news on Bryant. He had knee surgery and is expected to miss four to six months.

“Bears S Coby Bryant underwent knee surgery and now will miss 4-6 months,” Schefter posted on X. “Bears are hoping he can return for the playoffs.”

The Bears signed Bryant to a three-year $40 million deal in free agency, after the safety won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in January. He was expected to be a leader on the defense with rookie Dillon Thieneman expected to start in the secondary.

The Bears lost safeties Kevin Byard III, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson this offseason.

Bears defensive coordinator Dennis told reporters in July that he saw Bryant’s play energize the Seahawks defense last season. He was excited for what Bryant could bring the Bears.

“I love his play style,” Allen said, via the Bears’ website. “I think it epitomizes the way that we want to play the game. He plays fast. He plays violent. He’s smart. He’s instinctive. He just does a lot of really good things. He was an impressive guy to watch on tape.”

The earliest Bryant would return, based on the new timeline, is Week 14 when the Bears travel to play the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 13.
