Chicago Bears’ Montez Sweat admits to pass-rushing problem

Chicago Bears Montez Sweat

The Chicago Bears added Marcus Davenport on Monday, a veteran defensive end who has familiarity with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen’s scheme from when they were together with the New Orleans Saints.

Davenport was an essential add for a defensive line that had troubles rushing the pass last season. The Bears planned to teach their defensive lineman new techniques to get the quarterback. Instead of adding a flashy defensive lineman before camp, general manager Ryan Poles wanted to see what he had with the defense.

Poles should be concerned with how his defensive line played against the Cleveland Browns before the reserves came in for the second half. When speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Montez Sweat made an admission that wasn’t promising for the defensive line.

He praised Darnell Wright for his performance at training camp. Sweat claimed he hadn’t won a rep against Wright in practice.

“The strides that Darnell has made with his technique, his work ethic, just the way he goes around the building is tremendous from when I got here to where he’s at now,” Sweat said, via the video from the Bears. “I don’t think I’ve beaten him in a 1-on-1 rep yet, honestly.

“It started off with me making him better, now I think it’s the other way around. He’s making me better.”

Sweat was the leader for the Bears in sacks last year with 10 sacks. It’s troubling to hear that Chicago’s best pass-rusher can’t win even one 1-on-1 rep against Wright. The new techniques from the coaching staff have yet to sync in with a player set to make $24.5 million this season.

The good news is that Caleb Williams has solid protection from his right tackle. But the Bears need to see improvement from its defensive front seven.

Based on Sweat’s comments, the group has a long way to go to put questions about its pass rush behind them.
